Driveline clunk when shifting, isolated to center Dif or front Dif area

I started to have a clunk sound and feeling a few months ago. It only happens when the drivetrain loads a new direction. In other words:

shift from D to N- no clunk
shift form R to N- no clunk
Shift from R to N to R- no clunk
Shift form D to N to D- no clunk
shift from R to D- CLUNK
shift from D to R- CLUNK
shift from D to N to R- CLUNK

In the last few days it now makes a similar feeling even when driving when you go from acceleration to Coasting.

When I climbed under and have my wife shift it from reverse to neutral to try to isolate which u joint was bad, I didn't see any u joints that looks sloppy. I did however notice that when shifting between drive in reverse, the driveshaft that comes from the center differential to the rear differential doesn't move almost at all. However the front drive shaft that goes from the center differential to the front differential probably moves a bunch, a quarter turn(90 degrees). When I activate the center differential lock, the front driveshaft starts acting like the rear driveshaft. I'm wondering if there's something wrong in the front differential or center Dif. Since the slop/lash is only in the driveshaft that goes from the transfer case to the front Dif, and since when I activate the center Dif lock(which locks the output of the front and rear driveshafts together) it eliminates the problem, I assume the issue is in the front Dif or maybe the front half of the center Dif/transfer case.

I'm not sure if I have the time to tear into this myself. Once you get into breaking open engines, transmissions, transfer cases, its usually beyond my comfort/knowledge level. Based on what I described, does it sound internally fixable or should I plan on needing a new/used front Dif or transfer case? If the center Dif or front Dif is FUBAR, any idea what the book time is to have a shop replace? Just trying to get my head around what this might cost me.
