engine die out at stop. help please?

i have a 1996 sr5 with 145k miles. sometime the engine dies out as soon as i step on the gas after stopping at the stop sign or trafiic light. But the engine fires right up when i shift it to park and turn the key again. car still runs smooth. tia

You don't describe the symptoms on how it dies, so here's a stab at some things I've had happen to cause it:

1. Bad fuel filter

2. Plug need replacing

3. Battery shorting out (believe it or not, I had a Calais that died every time you hit the brakes because of a short in the battery).

That's all that comes to mind -- it's been a very long day and the mind is mush.

thank you for your input. it dies out as soon as i step on the gas pedal. once the engine halted, i have to shift it into P and turn the key to start the engine again. it then runs normal and the same problem will not exist again for a few days. #1 could be a culprit for this problem. i will give it a try unless someone can pingpong me to a better solution. tia

Could be your throttle position sensor or a Idle Control Valve (typically located on the intake manifold), or could be a plugged PCV.
