2004 Limited Air suspension problem {SOLUTION FOUND!!}

Hi all, i just bought a 04 limited with the air suspension. My problem is, the off light keeps blinking on and off. When i first start it up the light is off, but when i start to drive it, the off light will blink on and off continuously. The suspension is set in the neutral position and it doesnt seem to affect the performance of the bags (unlike some post on here which complained of terrible ride because it was locked in the low setting). On mine i can't seem to move out of the neutral position either. The switch doesn't do anything.

I went to toyota today and talked with a mechanic and he told me there are two sensors under the truck which measure the ride height of the truck. He said sometimes they get stuck and will throw a code and trip the off light to blink.

My question is, has anyone else had this problem?? What was their solution?? I crawled under the truck and found the two sensors he was talking about and they seemed fine and clean. when i jacked the truck up i could see the sensors moving. I shot them with a bunch of wd40 just incase there was something inside that was stuck.

Anyways, i'm out of solutions and was hoping someone on here has had the same problem and could offer some advice. I'm just afrade to take it to the dealer and get ripped off on their shotgun repair methods.

Cheers

jonathan

I had to have both rear sensors replaced. My suspension would adjust up/down on its own. On occasion the dash light would blink. If the light is flashing, the control switch will not operate. It's going to be very expensive. It cost me $1200.00 to have both sensors replaced.

Just as an update.

i went and bought the alldata subscription on the 4runner and i have to tell you that its the best 24 dollars i've spent in a long time!!!

It has everthing in very good detail and it explains it fairly simply.

It showed me how to pull the code off the computer that was giving my air suspension the fault code. It turned out the right rear sensor wasn't working properly. All data even showed me how to test the sensor, which i did, and i found out that it was giving inconsistent data to the air suspension computer. I called toyota to see how much a new sensor would cost me and they quoted me 450 dollars!!!

Before i shelled out that much cash i decided to take the sensor apart and see if i could diagnose whats wrong. I was expecting a sensor full of printed circut boards and resistors and things i knew nothing about. It was nothing like that!! Its perhaps the simplest thing i've ever seen with three contacts and two fingers that swing along a resistance pad. I cleaned everything with electronic cleaner, found out that there was a little bit of corrosion on one of the contacts, and bingo!! A sensor that worked 100%

So if anyone else has a problem with their air suspension and its saying the rear high sensors are bad, before buying new ones, check to make sure there isn't any corrosion on the contacts.

I am having this problem too. Maybe I should just do what you did too.... How does it run now?

The OFF light will blink and the switch won't work if you have a blown fuse.

It runs perfect.

I'm glad my experience has been able to help a few people.

Funny thing. I changed the sensors. But a week after I had the same problem and now they are telling me its the compressor. So I took it to the shop and I saw a tear in one of the airbags. SOOOOO, long story short, the 4R is never going to see the garage of a stealership.

New remedy: Disengage the airbags all together. Install a OME lift. Im getting a bracket fab-ed for the OME in the rear and the front will be direct swap. Im just waiting on the OME kit right now.

So last night my 4runner lost the air suspension completely. The light has been blinking for a while. I drove it home 25 miles sitting all the way down in the back. So this morning I start it up and low and behold the suspesnion comes back up and levels. But the light is still flashing. So I decide to tear into the sensors only to find the right rear sensor has a corroded contact spring. I clean up the contact spring, reassemble it and the light is gone. I never even did the left one. Now i need to adjust the sensors because shes sitting way up in the back.

Great info on how simple the sensors come apart guys.

Thanks

Today I lowered the sensors and the back seems to have come back to a good height. when I have some more free time I'll pull out the left side and clean it out. Someone should make a rebuild kit for theses things, all it is is 3 little brass springs.

I am just about to get the OME as well as my wrecked airbag finally finished itself off yesterday. I have the same rig as you. How do you enjoy the ride after getting rid of the RAS and having the OME? I feel nervous thinking about what it will feel like once this is done. Thanks

Hey there, I realize this is a crazy old thread. Wondering if there is a tutorial on how to get take those sensors out? I have a 2005 4R Limited and mine are located on top the airbags. Looks tricky to get to... your help is greatly appreciated!
