Rear Wiper and washer

The rear wiper on my '05 Sport quit working. The wiper or the pump for the washer will not come on. The front wipers and the wash fluid works fine. I assume both operate off the same pump.

Could this be a fuse issue?

there are two different pumps, but if the wiper doesn't work either then it sounds like something else is the problem... have you checked all your fuses?

The rear wiper, washer, and defroster all don't work if the computer thinks the window is open by even the slightest amount. Use the button on the dash to make sure it's fully closed.

If you have disconnected the battery, you may have to re-initialize the back window position as well. See this thread for instructions.

Thanks for the answer !!!!

I got up Saturday morning and checked the fuse before I checked this board. The fuse appeared OK. So I thought before I went down and purchased some fuses (I thought I would try that anyway) I check this board.

Guess what?

The window wasn't fully up apparently.

Many thanks to both of you for replying!!

This board rocks!!

rear wiper bad news

My rear wiper and rear defrost stopped working. I followed advice and tried to reset dozens of times....no luck.

Just took it in to Toyota. They tell me there are several problems:
1. rear wiper motor seized.
2. computer that makes sure window is up before the wiper runs is blown.
3. window jamb protection switch faulty.

Total parts about 900 dollars.
Total labor 300 dollars.

1200 (plus the 120 dollars spent on diagnosis) to get my rear wiper and defroster working!!!!

They did say if I found used parts they'd put them in for me.

I asked if they were sure of the diagnosis. They said it was their best technician and that they were sure.

Any advice mates????

It sounds like the problem could be 1 of those 3 things, but since they're not sure which one, they're covering them all. That computer is definitely the most expensive part. Since the defroster also doesn't work, I bet there's nothing wrong with the wiper motor. A computer problem or a sensor (switch) feeding the computer sounds more likely.

Did they tell you that they tested all of those things independently? If not, and if you're comfortable with taking the back door apart, carefully removing the plastic panels, then it would be worth it to do your own diagnosis. For $10 for one day, you could access Toyota TIS to look at/download the relevant parts of the Service Manual. The manual is usually pretty good about telling you how to test components, especially switches and motors.

Thanks for the advice Toto.

They said they did test each component independently.....I'm inclined to believe them, although it doesn't seem reasonable to me that all these things would all be kaput.

I can't quite imagine taking the whole thing apart myself....I can see myself surrounded by a bunch of parts with no idea how to reassemble....in spite of the TIS docs......maybe if I had a week to play with it I'd try it.

I think I'll try and find used parts at a deep discount to minimize the financial pain of all this.
