my 03 4runner had an evap leak P0442
Just wanted to let ya know that my 4runner just had a small evap leak problem. Code P0442.
I know this is an isolated problem but I just wanted to give ya guys a heads up for those who might experience the same problem (hope not).
Symptom:
Check Engine Light
OBDII Code: P0442
Error Code: Evap Leak (small)
Problem: Leak found in intake plenum area for the fuel. Not sure exactly where as they were vague on their description over the phone. When the part comes in, I'll have the part number so I'll know exactly what the problem was. I recall them telling me some valve problem... not sure... blah...
Like I said, this is probably an isolated problem and figure most everyone will not experience this. If ya do, atleast you have a general idea what the problem can be...

Hey Lance. Well, it looks like it's been quite some time since this happened to you. Unfortunately, it just happened to me with 105K on the odometer. Do you remember any specifics on the fix? What parts etc needed to be repaired or replaced? I've got the V8.
Thanks in advance! MUCHO!

A loose, missing, or poorly-sealing gas cap is a common cause of P044x or P045x. Evaporative emissions (a/k/a fuel vapors) from the gas tank are very tightly monitored and controlled, so the gas cap seal is very important.

Yeah, unfortunately, I'd already checked the gas cap and no change. My error code is the same that Lance was getting - P0442. Evap Leak (small).
My OBDII code reader is actually a decent one, and I can clear the code, but it comes back immediately.
I don't know if Good Times is on here much any more, but it'd sure be nice to know what exactly the fix was. Anyway...

Yeah, my 03 V8 is getting the same code. About 6 months ago my fuel pump went out and I dropped the tank to replace it, Something tells me that my evap leak may be somewhere within the myriad of hoses that I disconnected and reconnected while doing the job,, ughhh.

Before you go spending any money, as was mentioned previously, check your gas cap. It actually didn't go right away on mine - even though I cleared the code with my code reader. I just basicly thought "screw it, I'll get to it when I get to it". The light stayed on a couple more weeks. But the next thing I knew, the light went out and hasn't come back on. Good luck.

P0442, p0455, p0456
I purchased a used 2004 4runner after my 1999 was totaled. It came with a full tank of gas. The very first fill up I could not remove the gas cap. http://www.tamemymind.com/blog/image...all-yellow.gif
Couldn't turn it at all left or right. Absolutely stuck. Left the gas station and got my 24" pliers to twist off the cap. Not easy. All seamed fine. Put the cap on went to fill up, pilers in hand. Didn't need the pliers again until after 3 fills I took them out of the runner and left them in the garage. 4 th fill up, again the cap would not budge. Got home opened it with the pliers. Broke off the gas door latch keeper. http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/c...nfused0067.gif
Broke the gas cap clicker. Made a new latch keeper out of aluminum. works great. The gas cap just sits in the opening. After two months of driving, MIL ON, VSC off. Because the MIL is on the system automatically disables the VSC features, giving the additional error lights.
The shop manual has these three codes grouped together. P0442, P0455, P0456. They are in order; Small leak, Large leak, Very small leak.
Fuel tank cap is mentioned twice as the trouble area. Then there is the canister or its lines or the tank itself leaks. Cleared the codes.
Going for a new gas cap this weekend.

2001 4runner
Jayzero. was wondering if you have had the vsc off and vsc trac lights come on?
I don't have one of thoes fancy dancer computers but took it to the local autozone to have them hook theirs up. It came up with the po442 code. Wondering if the two are related.
Thanks in advance.

I will chime in here!
Yes - the VSC and TRAC lights come on in addition to the MIL in many cases. Once you fix the p0442, then you can reset everything and the VSC and TRAC lights will go off as well.

05 4Runner charcoal canister wiring harness
Hey guys, 2005 4Runner sport. getting tons of codes, I replaced my charcoal canister about a month ago, light came back on instantly. Tons of codes, been trying to figure it out. Turns out the wiring harness that plugs into the canister pump module on the charcoal canister broke off some pins and are now stuck inside the wiring harness. Does anyone know part numbers for the wiring harness? Thanks

I pulled a P0440, then a P0442, I ended up replacing the MAF sensor and the vent solenoid. The CEL turned off after that.

Hey guys,
Please be-a-where, that if your gas cap is REALLY the problem then of the 8 or so manufacturers of gas caps probably won's fix your problems for long. I know, I tried 3 different caps. None of them consistently worked. The parts stores took them back with no questions. One old salt parts guy said the aftermarket caps have a real problem sealing on 4runners. I was ding donned if I would pay the outrageous price of an OEM cap. After some research I replaced the o-ring on my original cap and it worked fine. Later I happened to talk to a garage mechanic of 40+ years and he said the OEM cap fixes it but the o-ring is the problem after 16+ years.
About 6 months later the leak came back. This time I cut a sticky backed flat rubber type gasket and carefully fit it to the older gasket on the old cap. Has worked fine for last 2 years.
Good Luck if you have this problem. The gas cap is only one of several causes of a "very small leak".

Memory lane.
Lots of good info in this thread, and brings back moments in my 2002 4Runners
EVAP SYS/MIL history of hell. Not really....I digress ;)
@ 278,000MI, I got a P0446 & P0440. Replaced the gas gap, reset/cleared ECU.
Light came back on @ 100,000MI. Ran all tests I was able to out of the manual. Still very intermittent.
I lived with this over 2 years and because the fix was elusive, I would just let the light stay on till' right before state inspection. I would clear the codes, and drive it 100 to 500MI so all sensors would set. In my state (TX) you are allowed one and only one non continuous sensor that is not ready at test for emissions for vehicles newer than 2001. This is for gasoline engines. Diesel engines have a different restriction. Can't remember it exactly at the moment.
This year MIL comes back every 200-300MI consistenyly with P0440 & P0446.
CAT and EVAP will never set after clearing codes. No check engine light immediately after reset, but EVAP and CAT IM's never ready. Will not pass emissions with 2 sensors not ready.
After reading through diagnostic tests and doing all those I could do myself, I just said the hell with it and replaced the EVAP cannister ASSY with a new Toyota OEM unit.
I drive 90 miles round trip work and back 4 days a week. It took 447 MI for the EVAP IM to ready. But this time all 7 sensors were ready. Passed emissions state inspection.
Blimey!!
That took care of it. I just got lucky.
