What do you mean backwards? Did he put the negative clamp on the positive terminal, and ground the positive clamp?

I have never heard of that causing it to smoke before. Are you connecting them correctly? Where are you attaching the negative clamp?

I'm not sure I follow you -- he if he connected the positive terminal on one battery to the negative on the other, then the battery should have exploded when you tried to start your truck.

And now when you say you "try to jump start" are you meaning you're still having to jump start your truck, or you're giving a jump to someone else?

Details would help -- such as, what color is the smoke? How much smoke is there? Any smells to go with it? etc.

I had a friend install wires on an alternator in his car --- reversing the + and - and it burned the wiring back to the gauges (not a yota). The smell and smoke is the insuulation on the wiring melting. Once that melts you get more shorting and more burning smell. My guess is you'll need to replace the wiring either the pieces that are melted or with a new harne$$. Find a smarter friend and have a good fire extinguisher ready.

Usually the extent of the damage is a blown fusible link. It's rare to do the damage that was done to your truck
