What are probable cause when "Maint" lights up in a 04 4Runner?

Members:

I am wondering what are the probable causes when the "Maint" indicator lights up permanently.

Advance thanks for your input.

I would check the gas cap, many times the light turns on when the gas cap is loose. I hope it's just that!

It means you have to change the oil. I hate to say this, but check your owners manual. It should begin flashing when you start it up at a certain mileage and then stay on when it reaches the next interval.

Check the owners manual -- it is there to remind you to change the oil. The dealer may not have reset it, and the instructions are in the manual.

Thank you all for your advise and help.

The reason I am asking this is because, I just did my oil change at 3000 miles. Therefore there isn't any reason for "Maint" goes off, isn't it?

By the way what is your oil change frequency 3000 or 5000? I am using Mobil1 synthetic oil.

Light flashes after 5k and then stays on after 7.5k. It will not automatically reset just because you changed your oil, you have to manualy reset it. The directions to reset it are in the manual.

The car doesn't know when an oil change has been done, it just lights up whenever it reaches a certain mileage.
