What exactly did you do as far as the unlock think 3 times? did you just hit the unlock button on the driver side door 3 times and that was it, or was it a combo of unlock/lock each 3 times? I am hoping that this works if i can figure out what order of unlcok thing you did. So after unplugging battery, the rear hatch opener would not open the tailgate until you did this unlcok procedure you are referring too? thanks....

After a rear camera install, same issue. A 3 driver's lock/unlock combo did nothing. Pulled the neg battery (I've just set the preset on the new HU ;)
Over night, reconnected the neg. Nothing. Then did the 3 unlock/lock combo and viola!

Try cleaning the positional sensor if tailgate door wont latch

I have a 2003 4-runner whose tailgate latch stopped working. Just a follow up. The disconnect battery followed by 3 lock/unlock worked for a while, but then the problem came back after the first time I opened then closed the hatch again. So, I took off the tailgate plastic panel, removed the latching mechanism. The mechanism has a tiny plastic postional sensor (has 3 small wires coming out, is attached by 2 small philip's head screws. I then used a can of compressed air used to clean computer keyboards and such and directed the blast of air into the 4 tiny holes in the face of the sensor. Then I worked it back and forth several times and cleaned again. I put it all back together and now the door latches fine. We'll see how long it last this time!

Tailgate won't open

Thanks for the tips in this post. I have an 04 4Runner that was having this exact problem. I unhooked the battery, and it started working again. It stopped shortly thereafter so I used WD40 on the lock and unhooked the batter again, and everything seems to be working great.

Mark86 thank you so much for this solution!!

I just installed a backup camera on my 06 V8. I unplugged the harness connecting the ecu to the latch motor. When I reconnected the latch would not work properly. It would manually latch w/ a loose fit. Opening required doing it manually.

I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes , reconnected & the latch works perfectly.

I just bought my first 4Runner (2000) the other day and mine didn't work either. I will be trying this fix as well. Juuuuust after I fix the rotted rusty frame.

Thanks again.

Hello. I had this problem and disconnected the battery. Upon reconnecting, it worked, but only once. Any ideas?

You didn't indicate how long you left your battery disconnected I would try disconnecting the battery for at least 5 to 10 minutes and then retrying the tailgate again other than that I have no further recommendations

Please let us know how this works out

This is why I love this forum!

I'm new here, and hoping to make a positive impact at some point, but for now, I just want to thank everyone who posts resolutions. I installed a rear view camera and my tailgate wouldn't work after. Disconnected the battery, waited 5 minutes, problem solved! Thanks everyone!

My tailgate just stopped working for no reason on my 2004 4Runner and because of this forum it is now fixed with out going to the dealer. I just disconnected the battery for 5 minutes and now it’s working! I never comment on forums but that just saved me tons of time and money. Thanks!

It worked for me on my ‘06 2WD Ltd... ...for about two weeks.

I’ve tried cycling the locks 3 times locked/unlocked by both the driver’s door and the hatch lock numerous times today; window up and down. Do I HAFTA disconnect my battery again?!

Toyotas - I own 4 of ‘em! Recently, for a few days, could honestly say FIVE including TWO Highlanders. Great vehicles. Some really strange solutions...

Thanks for a great forum and in advance for your help

To whom it may concern,

Disconnecting the battery did I the trick... ...for now. I made sure it wasn’t a one-time thing by opening the hatch 3 X.

Until next time... Tony
