2007 JBL radio issues

I am having some odd random issues with my JBL head unit i my 4Runner and wanted to see if anyone had similar problems.

Ive had it switch sources automatically from radio to cd but then the FM radio text still shows.

The cds will automatically eject with no user input at random times.

The display will simply drop out and be blank.

So i mainly have varients and combinations of the above issues. I was going to take it to the dealer and see what they thought and have them look at a few other things as well.

On a side note have any of you had issues with the drives seat heater not getting hot? I leave mine on high all the time and dont even really feel a difference vs it being off. It seems like the passenger side gets a little warmer. Niether is even close to heated seats ive felt in a mercedes ML500and cadillac escalade.

Sounds good. Over the weekend on a short road trip i lost the volume and tuning controls but they came back after restarting the car.

My 06 head unit does the same thing only on very sunny days when the car has been sitting in the sun. If I put up my windshield sun screen it doesn't happen, that's why I think it is caused by the heat. If I turn on the AC and drive a couple of miles all returns to normal. Never took it in to be looked at as it seemed like a minor annoyance.

ya i noticed that it was heat related, but i would honestly just take it in its worth the wait, plus you paid extra to have that sound system put in(which i personaly think is pretty damn good) why shouldnt you be able to hear it when you want

I went thru 3 units on my 2007. Turns out Pioneer mucked up the engineering.

I don't know if the JBL ones are also Pioneer engineered or if they are completely seperate.

Sounds like cold solder joints within the unit

If your HU looks like this...

The problem is overheating of this IC located on the rear of the front panel PC board which controls all front panel functions including the display...

Talking

Oks....Humn a chip or ciruit design flaw resulting in thermal runaway...
I guess I would try putting a TIM-PAD or the old Mica pad thats thick enough to bleed heat away to the frame. Besides that we would need a schematic to see how to MOD the circuit.

The older units from the 03 were made by Matsushita /Panasonic.

Anyone wants to send me theirs so i can play with it?

Check out the gold plated pads on the PC board! These units are beautiful inside.

I had problems with my 07 JBL head unit also. I would randomly turn off and eject all the CDs which sucked since I always had 6 discs loaded. I brought the truck in and the dealership replaced is with out any questions. They told me they have been having problems with this head unit in different models of toyotas that use the same one. Hope this helps.

Was it still under warranty when they replaced it for free?

Yes it was in the first of ownership I have an 07 that I bought Dec 31 07. You should be still under bumper to bumper warranty unless over due to mileage.

My 2005 JBL unit is also flaky. I have lost the volume control, source buttons and all steering wheel buttons for a few minutes.

As for the heated seats, Toyotas don't get very hot. It must be some sort of safety thing!!

I just wanted to post an update.... I went to the dealership and they are replacing my JBL headunit with no real questions asked. I told him what it was doing and he said itsa known issue and they will order a new head unit for me. So now comes the waiting game for it to get here.
