Toyota Says "No" to Sunroof Fix"

So I had the dreaded sunroof problem on my '05 4Runner. It wasn't quite closing all the way on the left side. Took it in to the dealer yesterday and the service writer called today and said that the "cables needed adjusting" and Toyota would not fix it under the extended Platinum Warranty I have!

The wife is furious because in the last 4 years the sunroof has been used less than a dozen times.

It got out of adjustment (somehow) when the battery died and I needed to recalibrate all the windows and sunroof.

Has anybody been successful in getting Toyota to pay for this under the extended warranty? The dealer is talking like $400.00.

I do plan to write a letter to Toyota Corporate after the repair in a "last ditch effort" to get them to cut me a check!

Not trying to justify the charges...I am sure it's high. Once they have it taken it apart, what are you supposed to do...say don't touch it let me shop around?

Remember, I was counting on the Platinum warranty taking care of this.

BTW-standard dealership labor is $95.00/hr.

I am looking for comments on how to get Toyota to pay for this.

Thanks.

A quick (er) interim fix might be trying a couple different dealers. Other than that, request a letter from dealer stating they are denying your claim, print out the exclusion list of what your Platinum Warranty covers and mail one copy to Toyota Corporate, and CC one to the dealership manager.

Have you reviewed your warranty agreement to see exactly what it does cover? I have found that service writters have a tendency to say "no" right aways and then when you look it up yourself it's listed as covered.

It's not excluded on the warranty contract. They called Toyota and Toyota declined the coverage. I plan to write Toyota a "nasty gram". How does a sunroof become "out of adjustment"? They should cover this.

Be realistic. They (toyota) are big and fat. They don't care any more. If they said f... off right away so it will be. What can you do? You can write here and there but it is just waste of your time. You are alone in your battle but toyota has deparments to deal with people like us. My .50 cents...

Your right. It's a long shot at best. But it's worth 20 minutes of my time to write the letter and the cost of the stamp. I don't plan on wasting my energy plastering this all over the Internet. Just wanted to let others know on this board. If you have this (common) problem, and you have the warranty, don't take it to a dealer. Go to an independent sunroof installer who knows how to fix these things. You will pay far less than I did for a fix!!

Have you considered an Auto Glass shop for the repair if Toyota won't pick it up??? I know I would look at it.....(I manage a glass shop) for a customer if needed. My shop rate is $75 per hour, little better than their rate.....

I wish I could find the previous thread, but there is a way to readjust the sunroof alignment by holding down the switch. I can't remember if you slide the sunroof and hold or tilt and hold. After the dealer disconnected my battery, my sunroof wasn't closing correctly and this fixed the problem. Try this before spending any $$$!

There is definitely a mechanical problem, but here's the thread Mark is referring to about resetting things after disconnecting the battery.

The latest TSB for this problem is T-SB-0289-08 (September, 2008).
The text of it is in page 1 of this thread. Unfortunately, it's way over the attachment size limit as it's 13 pages with pictures.
