Erratic Speedometer

Just recently purchased a 1992 4runner, V6 3.0liter, 4x4, automatic.

Shortly after purchasing, I noticed that the speedometer would intermittently work. Then while not working today, the speedometer started jumping around (even while parked). At the same time the speedometer was jumping around, I heard something cycling underneath the hood. I parked and tried to take a look, but by then, the problem stopped and the speedometer was back to not working at all. Also, while the speedometer was erratic and whatever it was, that was cycling under the hood, my transmission seemed to almost be slipping?

If anyone has seen anything simliar or has any idea of what the problem could be, I'd appreciate the information. Just purchased this a couple of days ago and really don't have the money to take to a mechanic right now.

Thank you,

Bill

Sounds like you need a new speedometer cable. Sometimes they will make weird noises when failing so hopefully that is the sound you hear. The trnasmission slipping is a whole different issue though.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that the '92, with the automatic, has a speedometer cable? From what I'm reading, they have a speed sensor at the transmission and at the instrument cluster?

I think I've located it at the tranny, but I really can't find much documentation to tell me if what "I" think is the speed sensor, is actually the speed sensor. I was hoping I would find a loose cable, but everything actually looked fine.

Yeah no indication of it being controlled by a cable. Try this http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...e/combinat.pdf

Nevermind, here is where the cable is mentioned: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...o/instrume.pdf I thought that illustration showed a speedometer cable connection!

WOW.... this part is hard to find. I can have the dealership order one, but the part is going to cost $250.00. I've looked for used parts and it appears there is a slight difference between the years 92-94 and I'm having a hard time finding a '92 Vehicle Speed Sensor.

Anyone out there have one? I'd be willing to buy it and pay shipping/handling.
