does anyone know why the down/up thing works? what is the ECU state prior to that? on my 2007, i can only imagine that its part of the "normalization" process after you replace a battery since that's the only thing that's happened recently to explain the rear washer/wiper not working.

thanks community for helping solve my problem as well

Had this exact problem the other day, and your answer quickly resolved my issue: was able to keep the snow off the back window on my way home. Thanks!

This thread was a total life saver! I recently cleaned my battery terminals so I think that reset everything and of course, it as raining today and I realize the rear wiper wasn't working. Thought I'd have to swap fuses or take the whole door apart, but luckily I read this first. Totally worked!

This did not work for me, as my rear window was also inoperative. Somehow the rear wiper blade had gotten jammed against the spoiler while in mid-stroke, and that turned off all functions except the washer pump.

Freeing the tip of the wiper and then cycling the spray/wipe reset it all.

Terrific!

Rolling the rear window down and up worked perfectly! Thanks so much for your posted solution. I had just replaced the battery and thought that I must have blown a fuse. All the fuses looked good. So, I was pretty puzzled. Too much of a coincidence that the rear wiper, rear washer and rear defrost all stopped working right after installing the new battery. 2004 4Runner V8 Limited.

Wow, that worked like a charm! Neither the rear wiper or rear defrost worked, but rolling the rear window down and then back up fixed it.

Thanks!

Second time in 7 years Drmorbius has bailed me out on my 2003 4Runner. I made an account for the occasion. See you again in ~3 years when I again wonder why the rear wiper isn’t working.

Edit: 2.2.2024
I was off by a couple of years. Again was caught wondering why the rear wiper wasn't functional. Again found myself here.
