Limited slip TRAC, not sure what you call it, lots of beeping and clicking

So we got our first snow of the year in Massachusetts this weekend, and this is the first time i took my 06 4RUNNER out in the snow. I thought I would leave it in 2 whell drive to have a little fun, but to my dismay, the truck would not even move.

When on a slippery surface, if you hit the gas and the tires spin, I hear all this clicking from some sort of electricial component and the engine just goes back to idle, and the truck will not move.

Does anyone know if this is operating correctly? when i put it in 4 wheel drive, everything is great, goes amazing, but are you telling me that I cannot go to a parking lot, or a sand pit keep it in 2 wheel dirve and do doughnuts?

I understand the concept, but how can they design an SUV that you cant rip around and spray sand and mud everywhere... WTF?

Anyway, let me know if this sounds like it is operating correctly.

Thanks,
Pat

You might be having some issues with the clutches or springs in your limited slip. For info, here is how a limited slip differential works:
HowStuffWorks "Clutch-type Limited Slip Differential"

Everything is working as designed. It's what I call "driving for dummies".

I just find a nice snowy, empty, light pole free parking lot, put it in 4wd, lock the center dif. and go at it. It's really more fun to do 4wd power slides anyway!

I believe I read that the feature can be turned off. Check the 4WD section of the user manual.
