I had a '90 22RE w/5spd and stock 225/75x15 tires. It was a slug even when brand new. Had to turn the AC off going up hills. Worse are ones with oversize knobby tires and AT. Best gas mileage was maybe 21-23 MPG on long trip on flat ground - 16-17 MPG more normal. Daughter has it and still going strong at 200k - save her letting the timing chain eat hole in housing and frying the flywheel blue. I added manual front hubs (vs the original ADD) and added a K&N air filter. Helped a tad. Just too much weight for that little 4 banger. I'm sure a valve job, new rings and a hotter cam might help along with less restrictive exhaust. I used Chevron Techron FI cleaner ever 6 months to cure miss that was occasionaly there.
