Unhappy Overheating problem on 95 4-runner

I have an overheating problem with my 95 4-runner. It go passed the half temperature mark all the way up to red when it has been driving for at least 20 min or so. I have checked everything thing including taking out the water pump and change the thermalstat. It will not go over the half temp mark when it is idling in parked. There are no leak that I can see. I also noticed that the electric fan does not go on when it reach over passed the half mark. But it will turn on when the air conditioning is on. Does anyone know that is normal? I think I remember it turns on when ever it get hot before but not sure. I also notice that the AC stop working whenever it reach over passed the halfway mark on the temperature guage. Any help would be appreciated! THanks.

The electric fan in front of the radiator only turns on when the A/C is on.

Is your clutch working? When you start the 4runner when it's cold, you should be able to hear a roar coming from the fan for about 30 secs. If it doesn't your fan clutch is bad!

If the clutch is good, then check and see if there is anything blocking the air to the radiator. If nothing then get your radiator cleaned!

I was thinking about that but I did not know how to check the clutch if it's bad or not. Is that the only way to know if it is or it not working? I flushed the radiator with one of those Prestone kit. Do you think that's not enough? I can take the radiator out and get it clean in the shop...THanks for your reply!

The Prestone kit flushes all the old radiator fluid out of the engine and radiator. It does not flush all the junk in it. You have to take it to a shop to get cleaned.

I got down and dirty this weekend. Replaced the radiator and change the transimission oil since it was using the radiator for cooling. Put it back together and runs like a champ with air-conditioning blasting. What over heating problem! THANKS MIKE

BTW: the fan clutch was fine after I took at out and put it back.
