I hope that if we can all make the call to toyota, maybe, just maybe, someone will pay attention. It is very annoying during the colder months, and it needs to be fixed! Best of luck, and keep us informed.

Does this humming just occur in cold weather? Is this problem different than the vibration in the steering wheel reported? Reason I ask is, my next car might be the V8 4runner, and I'm trying to gather as much info as possible. Toyota has sold a lot of 4Runners (over 100,000 units last year), and it can't be that all of them are having these same problems, or is it just a small percentage?

Thanks not too happy I was hoping for Toyota quality not really feeling it yet. I sold my GM thinking I would have less problems so far it has had more problems I am not off to a good start.

Then I noticed that it REALLY occurs when the engine rpms are between 2000 and 2500. someone wrote about this earlier but I cannot find the thread.
That was me, in this thread, about five or six posts above yours.

I think you are on the right track here, as I got basically the same results at about the same RPM. I wonder if this sound is similar to the 2000 RPM drone that people were complaining about with the Borla exhaust system? I'd really like to know if there is anyone with a Borla or TRD exhaust that also has this problem. If it doesn't happen with the aftermarket exhaust, maybe I could finally convice my wife that I need to get one.

I don't know if this is exclusive to the V8 models either, because I have read about the Prado having almost this exact problem, and they are only offered with the V6 or a diesel option.

I wish I could just stay home on really cold days, but my boss might get a little pissed after a week or so.

I'm really not bothered by the problem that much anyway, I don't often drive above 70. Plus, at one time I drove a 6" lifted Jeep Wrangler every day, and that shook and vibrated at any speed, so I'm kind of used to it.

I still love my 4R, and I hope Toyota steps up to the plate on this eventually.

Thanks, MJ, I think you nailed it! I also think the reason we don't notice it so much in the lower gears is because the transmission generally shifts right at those rpms.

I really think this has to do with the cold. I did not here this sound during the first week with this truck. Now the temps are around -20C and colder I hear it. I hope it will go away when it has warmed up a bit.

I will mention it on my first service visit but I don't have high hopes.

I think it is a design flaw of either and engine mount or a exhaust mount. I think the rubber when cold may allow too much harmonic vibration through.

I think it is always there just much louder when it is cold.

Cheers,

I THINK the correlation with the cold is that the bearing grease and transmission fluid are a bit more viscous (molasses-like) in the cold and put just a little extra load on the engine.

Ok,

Strange but today it was just as cold -24C and when I drove into work, almost no noise.

Why?

Today is colder than yesterday and it was there yesterday. I have an idea why it is not there today.

We had a snowstorm yesterday and on the way home I gave the 4wd system a considerable workout. (Lots of T3 and VSC Action) Could this have loosened a stiff component up?

I was wondering if these who have the noise can take their truck for a little whoopin in the slippery stuff and then check for the noise again.

Previous to last night, all I was doing was drivng the truck on pavement.

Just a though.

mine occurs in cold or warm temps. heard it this summer in 90 degree weather. i am suprised they have not fixed the 2005 for this problem. that is very poor quality control. not all and not even a majority of 4Runners have this problem, but I believe there have been enough complaints, that they should've fixed it by the third year of production.

Could this rhythmic droning noise be an indication of any underlying damage to either the engine or the transmission?

I called my local Toyota dealer and they say they have not heard of this complaint?!!

That's a very good question, and honestly I don't know the answer. My gut feeling is that it is an annoyance, and nothing more. If it was a chronic problem I would expect the noise to be there ALL of the time. Frankly, however, is disappointing to have this "annoyance" in a new car.:rolleye2:

yeah, $37,000 is an expensive annoyance. The dealer might not have heard of the issue unless they call their regional tech support. It's not that common. What's more common is the low rpm vibration (non cyclic in nature; do a search for that problem) which has to do with vibration being transmitted through the steering column, which is what they dampened in the lexus. I believe that the problem in this thread is merely augmented and brought to our attention with the vibration transmission problem I just talked about. Regional tech support told me dealer there are no wearing issues, but a vibration has to cause wearing issues over time. Guess we'll find out.

Final thoughts (for now)

Although the harmonic noise is there, it is not that loud (in my car). I really have to concentrate to hear it if I have the radio playing. Most days I don't/can't hear it at all, so I don't consider it a "big deal." But, if this is an indication of a serious problem that will develop over time, I'd sure like to know now!
