Dealer oil change at only 1000miles
My dealer wants to change my oil for free at the first 1000 miles.
What's up with this? Anyone else get their oil changed at 1000 miles?

I did mine at 1K miles. I always do it with a new vehicle, gets out any production crap. I change again at 4K miles and then every 3750 miles.

Hank the Mobil 1 every 6-7K miles sounds good to me and from the UOA on www.bobistheoilguy.com the Toyota 4.7V8 is very easy on oil and can run that interval with no problem. I would also do that, but since Toyota recommends a maximum of 5K mile OCI, aren't you concerned about them denying a warranty claim based on engine lubrication failure? I plan on going to Mobil 1 with a 7500 mile OCI after my warranty is up at 60K miles. The Dealer uses Castrol GTX (good dino oil) and I have it changed every 3750 miles. Just easy and I figure if any problems, the dealer doesn't have anyone else to blame, so it will either be covered under warranty or covered by the dealer.

Some people feel that changing oil early in a brand new engine is good, since there may be small metal particles present from making the engine. I tend to change the oil around 1,500 on a brand new car. There is another group that says changing oil early is not neccesary because modern engines don't have metal particles like they did 20 years ago.
Some manufacters like Honda use a special oil to break in the car and they don't recommend you change the oil early.

I know it's cool.
I just wondered why.
Do they expect something out of the ordinary?
My wife has a new Lexus RX330 and the first oil change was at 5000 miles. (also free).
Like everyone else with a new vehicle I'm wondering like oh my gosh did I buy something that will be having a problem.
Ciao, Brian

No, it just sounds like you might of found a good dealer. I'd worry about the Lexus dealer, since I've own 3 Lexus (SC400, LS400 and ES300) and the dealers did oil/filter changes on all 3 at around 1000 miles.

Smart dealer, they do you a service and establish a base with you to get your future service business.
I think it is just good business and mechanical practices at work there.
BTW I would not suggest going to M1 after 1k miles. Probably wait till 10k to switch over. My experience has been that the 4R still wears in till 10k. WIth M1 it might take a lot longer, but I'm not the expert on this. Just old school on engines wearing in and oil changes.

Changed mine at 650 km and about every 4000 km afterwards. Am now around 28000 km and started running synthetic about 3200 km back. Am going to see if I can make it to the next 10000 km mark. Oil is clean as the day it went in. Just keep it topped up.

Changed mine at 1000, then switched to m1 on second change. Changing to mobil 1 early will not void your warranty. My dealer offered their synthetic, or said they would put my m1 in if I wanted. I have had mine for almost 15 months and have only 7000 miles. I change based on months not miles.

Don't you need to still change at the recommended 3750 mi interval to maintain the warranty? I run 8K mi intervals on delvac1, but my rig's 19 yrs old now. I guesss that technically, toyota would have to prove that one's neglect to change at 3750 mi intervals caused a certain problem (like the engine sludging up w/ varnish). I change based on the type of driving done and environment conditions (dust storms in the summer mean shorter intervals), long road trips mean I can stretch it out a little, etc.

Different dealers have different recommendations, but Toyota says is should be changed every 7,500 miles. I think the reason car manufacters keep the oil change high is to show that their mantianace cost are low. The 3750 might be coming from a dealer, my dealer recommends 5,000 miles.
I think the dealer changing the oil at 1,000 miles for free is a good practice. He is getting the customer back to see the service dept. and changing the oil early in the beginning is a good practice.
