Starting Issues

Hi everyone,
I have read several threads in here concerning similiar issues that I am having with starting my 97 4Runner SR5. I was able to start my 4runner a few times after having some starting issues...now it just makes a click noise (one click) when trying to start it. I replaced the battery (my battery was old so I replaced it anyway), and I still get the clicking noise. I tapped on the starter and tried starting it and still nothing. I am convinced that its the starter, but could it be something else? This starter looks like a real pain to remove (Ive read the other threads about removing the starter too). The starter is about $80 reman, but Im not sure that I can replace it myself. It looks like the brake lines, and part of the transmission pan or dipstick area have to be removed just to get to it. Just looking for some helpful advice, thanks.

Sound like the starter to me. Its not too bad to remove. 4WD is more difficult than 2WD. Youll need to remove the trans dipstick tube. Should only be one 10 or 12mm bolt. Also it will help to remove the one or two 12mm bolts holding the brake lines to the frame. The line will flex enough after that to work around. Youll have to twist and turn the starter in there until you find the right angle to get it out. Itll probably frustrate the crap outta you but it will come out.

start simple

i had a similar issue with my 2000 4r limited, it happened a few times over a 3 week period. i had to jump it a few times, even that was difficult. i just cleaned the battery terminals and cables and it started right up. used baking soda and denatured alcohol with some light dremel work on the inside of the negative battery clamp just to get some more grime off. we'll see how long it lasts. i was about ready to tear out the starter and everything else before i took a deep breath
