Question Automatic door lock/unlock

The locking/unlocking function on my '04 Runner can be programmed to function in different ways as per the Manual. Mine came preprogrammed to Lock the doors when shifting the tranny from Park and to Unlock when the ignition is turned OFF. I was able to program to Unlock when tranny is shifted to Park but can not change the Locking program. I want the car to Lock the doors when traveling @20MPH(or was it 25).
This is a very little issue but since I paid $26K for it I figured I'll make it work the way I want it. Hoping someone can save me a trip to the dealer.

I think the dealer has to make changes to the unlock program -- don't ask why you can do one and not the other. I wanted my doors to ALL unlock when I pushed the unlock button ONCE, and the only way to get that done was at the dealer with their plug-in computer. Good news is that they did it right away when I pulled in and I was on my way in under five minutes.

You can program some locking features

You can reprogram the automatic locking/unlocking yourself, the directions are in the manual.

You can't reprogram single-point entry yourself, though, the dealer has to do that. (unlock all doors with a single press of the remote.)

Thank you for the reply. I did use the manual to reprogram the Runner to LOCK the doors when it reaches 20 MPH. However it still LOCKs the doors whenever I shift from Park. I think the dealer has to fix this minor inconvenience with their computer.

Read the manual very carefully there are several ways to program the locks.
The wording is rather tricky.

I have mine programmed so the all the doors unlock when I open the drivers door
after turning off the key, they lock when you take the T4R out of park.

Yup...read the directions carefully. I think the shift lever has to be in neutral to program the locking when it reaches speed instead of park like in the case of it locking when shifted out of park.

Hi Cliffs,
I was trying to programmed as what you had. I wanted to unlock all doors after I turned the the engine off and opened my driver door. However, I have some difficulties. Basically my steps are as follows.

Close all the doors
Turn the ignition switch to "on"
Immediately, push and hold the rear of the power door lock for 5 seconds with the tranny in "N".

Am I missing something?

You have hold it exactly 5 seconds or it doesn't work. You know it worked when you let go and it confirms by locking and unlocking.

FINALLY got this to work, thanks to this thread.

Bobby is right, you have to hold it down for 5 seconds exactly. Now, maybe I count slow, but when I counted to 5, sometimes the system confirmed the reprogramming, other times it didn't. But when I count to 4, it works every time. So maybe it has to be between 4 and 5 seconds(?) Are we supposed to use a friggin' stopwatch for this simple procedure?? Jeez...I think the programmers could have given us a bigger "timing window", or maybe the manual should read "hold for 3 to 5 seconds", or such.

The other confusing thing is that the setting toggles on/off each time you try it, so until you start the truck and shift from park or drive past 12 mph you don't know what the setting is. Very confusing, although it is discussed in the manual.

Anyway, my truck is now set so all the doors lock at 20kmph (12 mph), and unlock when I shift into park.

Also, you can set it so the doors don't lock at all, if that's what you want.

I'm having some trouble with this as well.............

I am trying to program it so the doors unlock when I shift into park and am having no luck at all.........

My question is this......It says to hold the bottom of the lock/unlock button down........I'm assuming they are talking about the button that is on the door panel and that the "bottom" is actually the "UNLOCK" side of the button..........

That's what I am doing and it's not working for me.......

It's programmed to lock all the doors when shifting from P to D from the factory, but I want all the doors to UNLOCK when shifting from D to P......

Exactly 5 seconds.

Make sure all the doors are closed. Turn ignition off. Turn ignition to the "on" position. Within 30 sec (?) hold down the unlock button on the driver's side door panel for 5 seconds. Once you let go, the locks will lock and unlock to confirm the programming.

It's in the owner's manual.

Yeah, in the owner's manual........that's where I read the directions originally, evidently I wasn't holding it down for "exactly" five seconds though.......

That's the problem I had when I first tried it. Then I started counting the blinking ":" on the clock. Now I can do it every time.

BTW... Welcome to the forums!

I think many of you have the key to "on" and not "acc". once you close the door and turn the key to ACC you have 10 sec to hold the lock button down for 5 sec in order for it to work...

If you don't get to work within 10 sec your airbag will blow up in your face suffocate you with white powder leaving your face white with a bloody lip and nose making you look like bozo the clown! Then the LCD screen will blink and read "game over Please try again".

If you think you're slick and try to jump out the door or craw out the window don't even try it! the 4R will automatically luck all the door and cut power to them. if you're thinking about crawling out the window don't even try that either cause B4 you even get 1/2 way out the window will roll up and cut you head off!

So you decided what you want your fatality to be! better get it right the first time or else! :eek2: :jaw drop::behead:
