Here in Florida a windshield is covered 100% with no deductible. The reason why is because it is against the law to drive with a cracked windshield. The other windows would be covered after the deductible. Just a bit of professional advice....I would not turn in a claim for a windshield. Insurance is for a catastrophic loss and not for small claims....

I'm not sure how things are up in New England, but in New York glass coverage is part of comprehensive and mine is a $0.00 deductible.
As for worrying about your rates going up. This is part of comprehensive, its not something you did and not chargible against you. In New York at least this should not affect your rates. Otherwise I would not bother spending the money on glass coverge. Mind you it's not that much, @ $20.00 every 6 months on my policy.
One thing I did notice is my Toyota dealer did farm out the installation of their glass. They did use a reputable glass shop and gave me a copy of the install receipt also. This was not an issue with my insurance company though. I guess they figured a dealer would back their install with a warranty.

In Pennsylvania filing a comprehensive claim for windshield damage/replacement does not affect rates either. What would be the point of carrying comprehensive coverage if every time a windshield broke or a tree fell on a car or someone broke into a car and damaged it while stealing the stereo the vehicle owner was charged as if it was an at fault accident???

Back in the late 80's, my Toyota mini got broken into on campus and stereo stolen. The insurance company claimed "too much activity" and raised my rates. This was in San Diego. In fact, I've noticed rates increasing, especially over the past year, when I've made no claims. My theory is, the insurance companies are trying to make up for their hurricane losses in FL last year by increasing rates across the board (that, and continuously increasing health-care costs for their employees, I'd guess).

A better replacement
I think the best option for replacement is something that no rock will chip or break. Sean you should like this...See the link below.
Hard-core windshield

Here's my glass story:
I had a stone chip in the front windshield before I took delivery. The dealer in Michigan drove my SR5 up from Cincinatti and got a chip in doing so. Needless to say they will replace the glass (when the weather here finally warms up).

My tundra has 2 dings in the windshield. Also a huge scratch on the windshield. I had just bought the truck and a spare tire flew up after someone hit it, AND LANDED ON MY WINDSHIELD. Just scratched it tho. I was pissed.

Glad to see it isn't just me with these rock chips. Since I bought my 4Runner in March of 04' I've had nothing but chips and nicks until it finally just split across the entire thing. I just had it replaced but, I lucked out though......my wife works for a local dealer in thier body shop, so I got a break on price, only $160. I too have noticed that there seems to be more chipping on these windshields than on any of my previous vehicles.

Windshield cost
I had my 98 ltd windshield replaced by one of those mobile replacement cos a couple of years ago. It was between $200 and $300. They don't tell you up front that if you have chrome trim, it won't be remounted. Other than that it has held up fine.
