Not so fast guys.

I don't have any undercoating here in California.

I smell the burning rubber odor when I get out of the car also.

I think it is coming out of the rear wheel wells. Maybe it is the ceramic brake pads? I don't smell it in the front though. It smells like hot burning rubber.

I think the burning odor on the one-week old vehicle are just factory-fresh chemicals/coatings, whatever, burning off the engine and drivetrain in places. Had the same thing here, on a V6 purchased several weeks ago, disappeared shortly. Same on the last two Celicas I've had, bought new. None with undercoating. In addition, I cycle past a local Mazda/Toyo dealership often, and get whiffs of the exact same odor when downwind of folks that pass by on new-vehicle test drives.

Don't sweat it.

Bring it in to the dealership and see if the brake pads are touching the discs too much. A new vehicle will need time to wear some of the components down a little before its runs smoothly.

I didn't notice any smells, from the brakes, when I got my car because I had undercoating done. That effectively blocks out any smell.

How long has the smell been there for?

It is the sulfur content of the gasoline blend that is used in most parts of the USA. I live here in So. California where we already have the stricter gasoline mixture requirements and have NEVER experienced a sulfur smell. I only use reputable gasoline from Chevron, Unocal or Mobil stations.

BTW, the whole nation (USA) is supposely switching over to summer gasoline blends for the summer driving. I'd be willing to bet your sulfur smell increases over the summer months. This is supposely one of the reasons for the purposed gasoline price increases we are expected to see over the next few weeks. California requires stricter gasoline blends all year round.

I took my 2005 V6 Runner to the dealer and told them about the "Rotten Egg" smell and they just tolk me to change the brand of my gas. I have been using the same gas station for 3 years now with my Tacoma, Matrix and now my Runner and never had this problem till I got the Runner..What is the deal?

Koz 05-18-2005 10:36 AM

Most ALL 4Runners have this problem, all models/years. There are one or two owners claiming that their Runner doesn't have this problem, but I would bet it's every single 4Runner. Until everyone gets together and starts making noise NOTHING will be done.

OK Guys,

I have to admit that I have never smelled the 'rotten egg' or 'sulfur' smell around my 4R.

Just exactly what conditions have to be right for this to happen?

Is there a certain speed, engine load, window position etc?

I run el cheapo, regular Costco gas.

20054runnerfan 05-18-2005 01:13 PM

Just filling it up and driving it. I mostly smell it when the back window is down. I also smelled it when I had all the windows up and just had the vent on...It really stinks!

Koz 05-19-2005 11:12 AM

Just roll down the rear window and hit the gas hard!

But Koz, we brought this topic up earlier and then all of a sudden, all the Nay Sayers jumped in with all this advise which alone, left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

I think unless the 05 runners go in to the dealership for Bad Smell, then Toyota will have no idea that there is a problem.

Now, I often thought about having a Register that we could advertise on Edmunds, T4R.ORG, and other yota sites. I would think that if we got enough names, and address, then we could email this to toyota corporate (if there were say multiple THOUSANDS of database entries), other than that...

What do you do.

zduchene 05-26-2005 02:00 PM

I only get that smell when I drive with my back window open.

Think about what the drivers behind us must be thinking or feeling as their air conditioners pull in our exhaust right into their cabin.

Just wanted to chime in. I'm trying to get a 4Runner (just need to find an honest salesperson... :rolleye2: ). But I can tell you that I had noticed this smell back in '98 with my Nissan Pathfiner. It wasn't a choking odor, but very noticeable. So it isn't Toyota specific.

PROZAC 06-01-2005 09:06 AM

While I agree with you... its definitely not toyota specific, nor is it SUV/CAR specific. However, toyota does have V8s that do not stink it up like the 4runner.

Good luck with your purchase. The biggest advice I can give you (which I'm sure you already know), is to utilize email for quotations, familiarize yourself with edmunds, kbb, and CARSDIRECT.COM.

Have you chosen your specific model?

Hercules 06-01-2005 01:51 PM

Thanks. I've been trying to get as many qoutes via email as possible. However I think they've caught on to this tactic. Many request that I come in to their showroom.

Utilized Edmunds and KBB. It's amazing the defense these guys throw up against KBB. I swear they have a standardized response downplaying its validity.

Looking for a 4WD, V8. Preferably a Sports Package.
