NEW drive shaft
I had the infamous vibration form a bad u joint. Also found out that the drive shaft is NOT serviceable. After my initial rage, I started my search for an aftermarket shaft, I was NOT going to buy a new one from the dealer considering its NOT serviceable. After some much needed whisky and some research, I found a place. Got a NEW aftermarket shaft that is SERVICEABLE.
Cost me about $690.00 for a complete NEW, not used or refurbished shaft. I can replace the U joints in the future, should have been the case with original but Toyota does NOT agree apparently. Installed two weeks ago and all is well. Mechanic was very impressed with quality and price.
Got the drive shaft from : wholesaleimportparts.com

What year and model? An unserviceable drive shaft is news to me and probably many others.

Very noisy but lovely car
Hello guys
How are you ? I'm a new friend of you from Saudi Arabia and a new owner of a 4Runner 1992 4WD . unfortunately I have a problem with my 4Runner when approaching a speed of 90km/hour , it starts to vibrate and it gets noisy that I can't enjoy my music hahahaha
I removed the front drive shaft and the vibrations gone , but because I always drive offroad I can't keep it without the shaft
Can any one of you kindly provide me with the price of a new shaft

I have a new 2016 4runner and i have the same thing, stopped at red light, get a lurch like someone tapped my rear bumper. it makes me look back to make sure nobody hit me. I've searched around the forum and noticed a lot of posts of this but seems to apply to 2010-2012 etc tacos and some 4runners, I have not been able to find anyone posting similar for their newer 4runners. I've read previous posts of replacing the drive shaft by blueleezard but his vehicle was an 03.
I assumed since the TSB is on 5th gen that it would apply to the 16 but the TSB specifically called out the 10-12 vehicles.
Some help?

If you're mechanically handy, crawl under the side of the 4R and pump enough grease into the drive shaft slip joint until a quarter-inch of shaft appears. You'll see what I mean after 5 or 6 pumps.
Otherwise ask the stealer to do it.

i've read this is only a temporary fix? vs replacing the driveshaft?
I have yet to read anyone reporting this issue on their 14-16 4R

I did two rounds of grease on my 2005. Haven't heard a sound or felt a thump in 8 or 9 years. It's your vehicle and your choice how to fix the issue.

I've called 3 toy dealerships
1 said it's normal and there's nothing they can do about it, any previous fix does not work
1 has no clue nor has ever heard about it and asked to put a code reader on it and test it
1 has never heard of it neither but will look into it.
......sigh

Save yourself a bunch of aggravation and just pump some grease into the fitting. Above all, avoid the stealer that thinks a code reader will identify the problem.

that's what i'm planning-thanks for the recommendation, you're referring to greasing the zerk correct? and ya after the talk of code reader, i'm taking it to another dealer, i want this taken to a dealer to document this issue. I've already called up toy headquarters and opened a cse, tier 2 guy says first he's heard of this issue
from what i read the best way to duplicate this issue is rapid braking, with the AC running? what about with the heater, does it matter if ac is on hi or lo

I have been driving over 10K miles with no thump bump sensation.
The control arms found in earlier versions of the TSB are not required to fix the issue in my 2008 V8 4Runner.

is the 2010-2012 rear drive shaft the same as the current 2016 4runners? Since the tsb applied to those years, my current 16 has a thump/forward bump sensation as well, wondering if it's using the same drive shaft or if toy ever changed it.

I have this exact same thump with my 2005 V6 with 112,000 miles. I took it to the stealership to get the drive shaft greased and it still thumps. Now I would like to grease the zerks myself. What grease do I use?

Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump
More grease.
Any Greece fun should work.
Amazon or eBay or local store will have one.
Check out this thread:
Drive/Prop Shaft Greasing Guide
You want lithium based.
I added quite a bit. Visually saw it come out of the shaft seal and had to wipe it away. Did that until the color changed to new.
Haven't heard the clink since. I also have a spacer lift which will change the angle and might be helping decrease the clunk amount.
Have fun!
