Socal group pretty much use handheld HAM. A lot easier to take it with you when out of your rig and/or spotting.

I have both HAM and CB. I prefer ham radio due to socal group only use ham and it's a lot clearer than CB. I have a cheap Baofeng radio purchased from amazon that works great.

Yep that makes sense if traveling alone. We're always in a group and only do day runs. I would install one once I get into multiple days, out in the boonies and long mileage. Let us know what kind of ham you get.

Does anyone have a recommendation on a place that can do an alignment on a lifted truck? Preferably a place that's open on the weekends. Hoping to get it done before Oct 8-9

You still need a good antenna no matter how many watts you run.
Fixed frequency walkies at a sporting good store can go 20 plus miles. Cheaper no rules. Well none FCC actually care about. They shut down a repeater in so cal because guys goofed around. HAM has so many channels if you are alone you could roam for hours.
Still 5 watt is max on a handy talkie. FM, no repeater in a valley, is still line of site and rules. CB you can run a old radio shack CB with a k-40 magnet mount put a 200 watt amp and no one would notice.

I'm just putting it out there that I'm able to help with basic installs and needs including suspension, comms, bumpers, diff breather, sliders, lighting, and regular maintenance. I've been working on car, trucks, and even firetrucks.
