SoCal 4Runner Shop Thread

This is the thread to post your favorite local 4Runner friendly shops. Recommendations can include customs shops and/or maintenance shops.

A good example would include the shop location, contact information, and review of your visit(s). Pictures are a plus!

If you're in the Orange County area and you need mechanical work, look no further:

Japanese Car Specialties - (949) 583-0811
25672 Taladro Circle, Unit H
Mission Viejo, CA 92691

The owner of this shop, John, is a Toyota guru with 30 years experience. 4Runners are a daily presence at this shop, plus he owns/has owned several. John is a master of the art, an honest mechanic who explains his work in great detail and solely uses only OEM or better quality parts. In addition, he makes sure every nut, bolt, and clip is removed and reinstalled carefully. The prices are fair and the parts he uses are top notch. Rest assured, if John performs a job, he does it right.

His shop contains a vast variety of 4Runner parts and custom tools specifically tailored to Toyota trucks and 4Runners. I wouldn't doubt that he could build a 22RE or 5VZ with his eyes closed.

He can diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues, perform clutch jobs, engine work of any kind, manual transmission rebuilds, transfer cases, suspension, lockers and gears for your diffs, axle seals, air conditioning, interior, you name it.

His wife, Wendy, sets the appointments, so be sure to tell her that James from the 4Runner forum told you to call. They'll treat you right.

Some of his Toyotas:
1985 Toyota Pickup Xtra Cab - Converted to a 22RTE Turbo, Auto to R151F 5-speed swap. It's got loads of custom goodies such as electronic cruise control adapted from a 3rd gen and a custom 28 gallon aluminum fuel tank.

1997 4Runner SR5 4x4 - TRD supercharged, E-Locker retrofit, ARB front locker, and armored. The mod list is very long.

A common sight at the shop

A 96 SR5 and a 98 Limited

96 4R, 1987 4Runner with a fresh John-built 22RE plus an AC service, 97 4R, and another 96 4R, plus an 80 series

Land Cruisers are a common sight as well

3.0 2nd gen in for head gaskets. Alongside is my 99 4runner while installing front axles.

Johns 97 4Runner and my 94 Supra

84 300zx - completely rebuilt by John. My 87 4Runner turbo, which John has worked on. Blue 96 4Runner now belonging to michaeljtomey, which John rebuilt the 5VZ. John's 85 SFA turbo pickup w/ R151F trans.

Service Pros Automotive
1600 Grand Ave, San Marcos, CA 92078

Maintenance/Upgrade Shop
Only one man named Jeff works there, he's also the owner. He's a good friend and drives an 80 series land cruiser himself.

He's done clutch work, wheel bearing, and even replaced an engine for me. Good guy, good work and good prices.

Glad you guys got this going! Thanks for honoring the request ;)

Japanese Car Specialties
25672 Taladro Cir
Mission Viejo, CA
(949) 583-0811
5 stars on Yelp

I have been taking my Rav4 there for maintenance for years and when I finally bought my used 1996 4Runner with 2 cracked heads and other necessary repairs, I took it to John (owner/lead mechanic) at Japanese Car Specialties. He restored the engine of the truck to practically brand new. Very honest and trustworthy and made me aware of everything he was replacing. No BS like the dealerships. He's a very passionate mechanic who values his customers and truly is the master of the art. He owns a badass 97 4Runner that he's done all the work on as well.

I highly recommend this shop to anyone near or far. I drive from Rancho Cucamonga all the way there for all of my issues.

@ChildrenOfBodom Can you actually keep a list of different type of shops? and list the shops in each category
I can help maintain it if you give me edit rights to the thread.
  • Suspension shop
  • Stereo shop
  • Body shop
  • Wheel care and sand blast
  • Transmission
  • Tires and allignment

PLEASE!! I think it would look much cleaner that way.

For electrical issues that puzzle even dealers I have had lot of good luck with Tom Vo and he is very very reasonable. However, mostly worked on my 02 Camry and not my 4R yet

Shop info:

Tomvo?s Auto Electric & Repair - Auto Repair - 523 N Harbor Blvd - Santa Ana, CA - Reviews - Photos - Yelp
523 N Harbor Blvd
Santa Ana, CA 92703
Phone number (714) 530-6509

I am looking for a reasonable stereo and electrical install shop. Any recommendations?

Alignment shop and Lift installer

My dad and I have been going to Hank/Vodies for the last 25 years. They have a regular digital alignment rack and still use bubble gages for the tougher jobs like lifted trucks. They can install lifts and sell their own brand of spacer lifts. I took an old Ford prerunner there back in the 90's with bent i-beams and they were still able to dial it in. It needed bigger cams installed and the originals had to be drilled out which was no issue for them. FWIW no other shops in OC would even mess with it at the time.

Go big

I haven't used them yet but I've already decided that they will be handling my dirty work. I've heard nothing but good things about them and he was very helpful when I was looking for a shop. Friendly and quick.

Anyone know any good body shops? Lady just backed into me over the weekend. Gonna need a replacement rear bumper...I'm always worried about body shop paint jobs as there are always imperfections. I'm in OC so that would be preference.
