We were up in Carrizo Plain National Monument this weekend and are thinking of going up again next. If you get up into the mountains and away from the tourists, it's just breathtaking... with some great offroad trails!

Fish creek primitive campground or Arroyo Salado. Both have pit toilets which is nice Fish Creek has fire rings Arroyo Salado doesn't so you have to bring your own.
How old are your kids?

There will be 4yr old to 13 yr old.
Trying to stay away from group sites. Looking for one off sites. I've mostly camped on fish creerk (wash) but we risk a flash flood.
thanks for the info

I’ll be out there Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning. Not sure which trails but planning on hitting dirt one way or another. Probably Wind Caves in Fish Creek either Fri or Sat and possibly Coyote Canyon to Sheep Canyon to check out wild flowers (away from the crowds). Been wanting to run Grapevine Canyon for a while, so that’s a possibility. We’re keeping a loose itinerary so who knows lol. Will have my 13 y/o and her friend with us so family friendly trails only for us too. Friday has a chance of flash flooding so we’re keeping that in mind. PM me if you want to discuss further.

Zion (or Yosemite, or Yellowstone) sounds like one of the levels of Hell over a holiday weekend... you're a better man than me! :-)
(though perhaps Easter is early enough that it'll be bearable??)

This. I’ll only visit these parks in February or March. They are absolute zoos after that. Go watch the video of Angels’ Landing @zionnps posted yesterday on Instagram. No thanks!
