We escaped from SoCal 5 years ago, but had some good trip there.
Try this site for info: San Bernardino County, California - Dirtopia, the Off-Road Encyclopedia
3N16 toward Big Bear is scenic and easy with campgrounds along the way.
For a 2 day trip, Mojave Preserve has been good for easy trails. My old posts:
Mojave Preserve Apr 25. Macedonia Canyon Road
Mojave Preserve - Lava Tubes Scenic drive Sunday

Ah I know it's a late post, but sugar pine mountain 2n49 is a nice trail, along with rattlesnake canyon rc3331 to 2n01 is nice as well, with only a few hairy spots (stock 3rd gen w/2" lift and highway tires and I made it). Can bbq on both to my knolege.

Over by the 15 Freeway is Sheep Creek Truck Trail. Did it a few weeks ago in my 2WD 4th gen. Easy dirt road with great views. Took me about 3 hours.

Yes forgot about sheep creek truck trail. It is a beautiful drive, not that rough and a great drive. There's a few places up Lytle creek too, but they can be rough.

Just got back from Big Bear 2N02
My Baby Girl doesn't like either elevation changes or being bounced around. She surferred from motion sickness and puked like 4 times on the trail.
We still want to get out there. And enjoy being out there. Just something new we have to deal with.
I'll do some crazy stuff by myself or with the older kids

That's a bummer about the motion sickness, 2n02 is pretty rough, really rough towards the backside.
I once ran into a few other off roaders up on cleghorn and one of them had a infant in the back and was taking some of the extra credits. Funny thing is the kid was out like a rock, I swear I heard snoring lol.
But sheep creek is pretty smooth, it is a well maintained fire road. But going up to it through Lytle creek (past the shooting range) can be really rough.
Gold fever loop is docile and smooth up in big bear. Also 4n16 is a nice out and back too that is smooth.

I do up to Lytle creek pretty often with my boys and there are a few mellow roads up there. I also did cleghorn with my boys, one of whom is 1 years old, and they all slept most of the trail. Actually pretty much anytime I take them out for a trail run they sleep most of the time lol

Lol that's funny, when I was a kid and we did anything of the sort I was wired awake and usually sitting on my dad's lap "driving". I have yet to finish exploring Lytle creek, I usually do off roading after a range day up there, ends up being super relaxing. Really wanted to get up to the top of mt baldy but it's a closed gate.
There are a few trails that lead into Joshua tree NP that I have been eyeing. They are on notarubicon's website, I think they are berdoo canyon and old Dale road. I enjoy a challenge once in a while, but I'm not into rock crawling or massive trail damage to the 4runner.

I’d like to venture out and do some more trails outside of just the local San Bernardino mountains. And that gate to mt baldy has been closed since I starting going up to Lytle creek back in 2009

Yeah just had to check in the runner lol. My dad and I rode our mtn bikes back from baldy side to Lytle creek a few years ago and I kind of remembered it from then. Yeah I too am kind of wanting something besides San Bernardino mountains. I'm also looking at running the Mojave trail some time too.
