How does Search work?
It seems search only looks at the very recent past. Is there some setting that can be changed? Is it case sensative? It's very hard to snap back with a "do a search' when it really doesn't work that well.
If you remember who posted you search a username and that goes way back.

Wondering if the mods can chime in on this.
I don't search often but I went to search for audio info that I know was out there in the past. Back in the day, the search was wide open to all posts. Then some time in the last year I think it was cut back to a 1 year span. Now the search is down to 3 months as CJ3 points out. So, I have to post to request info and if I'm lucky someone chimes in who remembers the info or posts new info. Worse case is there are no replies which makes the forum useless to the user's even though the info is there somewhere. The forum goes downhill from there because new user's don't see the wealth of history available to them because they can't get at it.
What gives? 3 months is useless. Not trying to resurrect the old debate over software (not my forte) but what can we as users do to help this forum to either upgrade or recover some functionality?

I have mentioned this before. Yes, it is a problem. The search only goes back for a few weeks, which makes it pretty much useless. I will try and see if we can fix it.

I'm not having this problem for some reason. I just did a search for "xbox" and it came back with 53 search results dating all the way back to October of 2003:

Hmmm...

Your link didn't give me a search result but took me right to a thread so I did my own search for "xbox." It came up with 45 results back to 2004. So I redid a search for "speaker" and it came back with 51 results in the last 3 months. Then I searched "wheel" and again got 51 results but now in less than 2 weeks. Maybe it isn't time related as I first thought. Maybe it's limited on the total number of results allowed (51?) Something is still funky.

Here's my search result for "xbox":
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/search...der=descending
Edit: Well that's weird, I was just looking at it and it had 53 results going back to 2003, but when I posted the link to it just now and clicked the link it only has 44 going back to 2004. Very strange.
Edit 2: I just tried "pizza" and it gave me 59 results back to April of 2003.

I just tried "timing chain" in the 4th gen. section and came up with 3 results, stopping in Nov. 2008. It has work like this for months.
There are quite a few write up, some I have done in the 3rd gen. section, that I was hoping other people could use in the future. When people ask the question, I can't even find my write up.
I find it wierd that some can get it to work.

Can the mods please resurrect looking into the search feature? I'm trying to search back for items to bump in order to help with current topics (i.e. brake calipers) but it's useless. Tried the Google site search method and got bogged way down.
Please, please, please try and fix this! I feel it's strangling the forum.

the "view new posts" link NEVER WORKS! this site is getting worse by the day...I like this site alot, but its never updated...if I can help in anyway, let me know. I would love to see the search function updated, the picture gallery is a mess, the T4ROTM is never updated in a timely fashion...like I said, these are issues I have with the site and I'm willing to help in anyway...please advise.
thanks
