Solo run up Red Cone, CO

Took the family camping off of red cone pass. Here are some scenic photos of the trail. The wife harasses me too much when I take pics of T4R! Ha!

Since we made the run successfully, I guess I can now call myself an "experienced 4x4 driver"!

This is the trail that ascends the first peak of red cone

This is at the top of redcone, looking at the next ascent. The trail dips off in the photo because this part was crazy steep and loose. To the left is the decent down and the start of handcart trail which takes you back to the beginning. It was a big three hour loop. red cone up, handcart back

Here are a bunch taken from along the top, and a little bit of the T4R.

Here are the narrow (wouldn't bring an H1) switchbacks at the start of handcart trail, and the beginning of the drive back to the start.

This is from handcart looking back at the trail down the cone. You can barely see the trail on the ridge of the cone in the center of the photo (just above the snow).

Some more from handcart

This is my favorite photo.

Trail report:
I think this was a great trail, but definitly had me white knuckling it a few times. No difficult obstacles or risk of damage though. The decent down red cone is so steep and loose that it is not recommended to go up (one way only) going down I had to let off the brakes at one point and go a little faster than I would have liked, because the tires started to slide on the loose rock. Luckily you could keep your eyes on the base where you could roll out the unwanted decent speed. It took about two hours to get to the fork where you can take webster pass into montuzuma or take handcart trail back. We took handcart to make it a nice loop. The switchbacks at the start of handcart were really narrow (to me at least). I really liked being in my narrow little 3rd gen on that part.

Definitly a trail worth doing...For the views and the nervous rush! Hope you enjoyed the pics.

sn0wrunner, I was thinking of running Red Cone to Radical Hill, then to Deer Creek down to Montezuma or South, Middle, or North Fork down to Breck on Saturday, August 22nd. I'll post an announcement when it gets closer but let me know if you're interested.
