'02 w/ 190,000 miles--> Overhaul?

Good morning.

Just picked up an '02 4Runner with 190,000 miles. Car seems well maintained, and there is a decent history of service. The engine sounds a bit tired, but that is most likely due to an overdue adjustment of some sort.

I would like to get everything serviced on the car that could need adjustment, replacement, refilling or realignment, etc. I am not afraid of spending money; I would like the car to last for a few more years if possible.

Which items should I direct the shop to investigate? What preventative maintenance should be done to ensure even longer life? Are there any big things I need to look out for?

Congrats on pulling the trigger, you'll be very happy with the T4R,

Wow, my 95 has 170k lol...

First thing I would look into is getting ALL the fluids flushed, Oil, coolant, tranny, TC, Diff (if 4x4) etc. Do you have any receipts for timing belt, waterpump/tensioner change? Hows she ride as far as suspension wise?

Definately take it somewhere to get checked out. They'll keep going if you take care of them, especially that body style.

The brakes were just replaced about 10K ago, and CARFAX shows the transmission was replaced at around 100,000. The fluid flush is a must-do.

I might grab hold of a service manual and look at all the major things that were supposed to have happened by 200,000 miles, and then either have them checked or simply have them redone. Never hurts to be careful.

As for the suspension, it is hard to say. We also own an '08 4x4 V8 limited, and the ride from the 02 4x2 V6 SR5 sport is completely different--which is to be expected since the trucks are so very different. My guess, though, is that the suspension is pretty shot, so I will have the shop look at that, too. The front end will probably need a significant refresh.

Any more ideas are welcome!

maybe you can try to have the valve timing adjusted if it's noisy.
