Hey gang,
Looking for thoughts on my 03 Taco Dcab 4x4 vs my wife's 04 4Runner sport w/ XREAS. (I alos posted this over on TTORA - direct CC)
She's thinking of getting a smaller vehicle CR_V or similar for better mileage to stay ahead of the gas cost curve a bit so that presents me with an opportunity to inherit the 4Runner....but I'd have to sell the Taco. Here's the specs on each:
My DD - 03 Taco Dcab 4x4 (3.4 obviously) 39k act mi, I'm the 2nd owner - next to mint condition, hitch, no mods - Radiant Red (my favorite color) - always garaged etc. 21MPG avg (owe ~5k on it)
Her DD - 04 4Runner V6 (4.0 vvt-i) 4x4 Sport 66k mi, X-REAS suspension, 2 tone leather, heated seats, very sharp, hitch, roof rack, steering wheel controls, 100k mi Toyota platinum warranty. We bought it with 34k mi. She gets 19MPG - I can get 20-21 out of it DD'ing. Galactic gray. (paid off)
So what am I going to do with it right? Well mainly a DD BUT I do want to take some trips out west - no hardcore mud but definetly off road as I am getting into hiking/ climbing more and more. (I'm in South Central IN keep in mind). We took the 4R to CO 2 years ago and to TN a few times - was great on mileage ~25 and performed great.
I also have an ATV that I may want to haul at times. It may fit in the Taco bed, I've measured but haven't tried it yet would be very tight (06 Yamaha Kodiak 450) and may ride with buddies 2x/ yr on an ATV trip. - Could buy a small trailer, but $ adds up.
I like the old school Taco with it's proven reliability, classic styling with the 4 doors and the bed space. When compared to her 4Runner, I dislike the non-heated mirrors, harsher ride, no stereo controls on the wheel adn it can be cramped at times.
I like the 4Runner for the looks (4 years old and still has that "new" style look to it) the XREAS ride, wheel controls etc.
They're both more than capable off-road for what I'm going to do.
Other items of note:
We have a 1 yr old boy - mainly rides with her, but occasionally with me - either way we're good with the 4 doors.
I can pull a small trailer for the mower or ATV with either one - 4Runner pulls better though.
I guess the lack of bedspace is a worry for me cause if I did this I wouldn't have a truck on the place at all - very uncharacteristic of myself. I usually have a heavy truck 3/4 or 1 Ton.
We have a new house we built last year on a hilly 25 ac that's been logged and I'm getting an outdor wood stove for heating in the coming weeks. I want to be able to get wood from the woods - I have a newer Kubota 4x4 tractor that can do some of it but most terrain is very un-tractor friendly.
Curve ball:
My dad has a 91 Toyota Reg cab 4cyl 5spd, 3" body lift, (4 yr old paint - Radiant Red - did I mention that's my fav color) with 140k (new timing chain/ guides, water pump, oil pump, valves set, new shocks and brakes) - no rust but burns some oil, good BFG AT KO's that I can get for $2k. Needs AC recharged, a tailgate (have a mint one) and a dent banged out of the RR bedside. probably $500-750 worth of paint/ bodywork.
I can get the easy wood (no jokes here ) with the tractor and the harder stuff with Dad's 91. It'd be a cool off road buggy and a back up driver if need be. I could use the Kodiak and a small trailer too but it may be too small of loads to be worthwhile this way)
Gas prices are on the brain and I have thought about another 7.3 Powerstroke and a DD civic but I don't want a DD civic. I want to like what I drive daily you know?
Givern ALL THAT what are your thoughts/ experiences? Is there something I'm not thinking of? What would you do?
