So I'm planning to drive from the bay area to southern UT to visit the famous NPs there. I call them the ABCZ (Arches, Bryce, Canyonlands, Zion).
My philosophy of use was a one person sleeping platform so I didn't have to take it out but still have room for two others to sit when occasions arise.
Most parts were free or sourced cheaply and anyone with some basic power tools can do it (miter saw and circular saw). Most expensive item was the carpet liner from Amazon. It took me about 3 days worth of works. Platform is about 26" wide and 6' long, perfect for me.
I also wanted to open the rear hatch window from the inside without the key.
