1996 4Runner 3.4 auto 4x4 with 480k miles.
Cranks strong and fires up quickly. Idles at 1700 rpm when warm. Randomly it will seem to try an idle down. Revs will get to 1200 then go right back up to 1700. Sometimes revs will fall to almost normal, but idles very rough and often stalls.
Applying throttle will (most of the time) will cause the engine to die. Sometimes it will rev first, but most of the time it will die. Other times it will actually rev. When it does rev, it pops into the intake before it revs.
No CEL, or pending codes.
Trying to manually force close the throttle blade does nothing, and no changes to revs.
I have swapped out both complete throttle body and Mass air sensor.
I have a DIY smoke machine, and have checked for leaks in the intake. No smoke leaks anywhere.
I purchased this 4Runner with a bad transmission, and in “not running condition” it had sat for a few years before I started working on it.
Any help or advise would be great.
