2003 Transmission Issues

So I have a 2003 V6 with about 170k and it seems to be a little clunky downshifting. Usually the issue is when I've come to a stop and release the brake to step on the gas, it takes a split second to get in gear and thumps a wee bit.

It doesn't happen super often but it is concerning as I just bought it last year and it's a great truck otherwise. I'm just wondering if it's a sign of worse to come and if there's something I should do to address it early.

I've done some googlin and the two most common issues are throttle position sensor and/or shift solenoid going bad. I'm just wondering if anyone has had this issue or can lend advice.

Have you done a transmission service? I would start with fresh fluid, and perhaps a trans cooler before you start replacing stuff.

If you haven't don a transmission fluid change, you should. It will help a great deal.

You have the 4speed tranny with dipstick , check the fluid on level ground and top up if needed. As others have said have a full fluid exchange done and you should be good to go.

Are you sure it's not just the slip yoke that needs lubricating? When they get dry, it will often thunk after a stop. Otherwise, wholeheartedly agree with getting a full fluid exchange with TOYOTA fluid ONLY. Unfortunately, that usually means bringing it to the dealer since shops pump their fluid out of a 50 gallon drum and it's very generic even though they will try and convince you otherwise. And of course, the dealership may try and tell you it's a lifetime fluid like they did me so just make sure you can view them actually do the change.

How can I tell if it's the slip yoke?

Is it a 4WD or 2WD?

If it's a 2WD it's not the slip yoke as only the 4WD seems to be the ones with this issue and also the 2WD don't have zerk fittings to grease on the driveshaft.

If it's a 4WD just grease the slip joint on the driveshaft until it moves a bit from the grease going in, usually 15 to 20 pumps on a grease gun, if that was the issue it shouldn't be doing the thump any longer until it needs greasing again.
