Took my 2WD 04, V8 124,000 miles, to the dealership for Transmission and AC service when the SA pointed out a leak in the XREAS system. (No RAS)

I've decided swapping out the XREAS with Bilstein 5100 Adj/FJ Coils and just wanted to make sure I get the right parts. My goal is to level, and have a slight lift. I will eventually get larger tires, 17" wheels, after my current ones wear out.

- Bilstein 5100s (Front/Rear) Front adjustable to .85
- FJ Front Coils, 2007-09. Since used are hard to find, I may buy them new for $80 each.
- Do I need rear FJ Coils
- Do I need other components, Strut Mounts, bushing, etc

Rear FJ coils will have the same wire size as the fronts so you'll have similar spring rates and coil stiffness between front to back. Some report a slight lift with FJ rear coils over stock, but many also say they got no lift. It seems to vary, maybe depending on of your stock coils are worn and sagging. You might want to get daystar (or similar) coil spacers for the rear coils. With the .85 setting on the front you may just even out the height with no rear spacers. If you want to keep the factory rake, you may need the spacers. I have my fronts on 1.75, and the rear daystar spacers. I kept the factory rake, I like it. I put 265/70/17 sizes tires on. No issues at all. You might need new "top hats" for the front shock mounts depending on the condition of your. I saw some videos where the hole for the top mount shaft was oval-shaped during to wear and required replacement.

you can also run trd tacoma coils if your looking for used coils. im running trd of road coils that i got for free

I swapped my stock suspension with bilie's 5100 and fj coils. I set mine at 1.75 and put 1.5 daystar in the back. I have close to 3 inch lift front and 2 in the back. You can look at my garage and see if you like the stands.

What would happen if I used the original 4Runner Coils with Bilsteins at .85?

Nothing, meaning it ought to be just fine. Usually coil swaps are done because they are providing some, if not most or all, of the lift (such as OME, Toytech, etc.). The FJ coils are a little beefier so that will add some stiffness. I understand that the Tacoma front coils are even thicker than FJ's so that'll be stiffer still... and the stiffer coils are also usually put on to account for the extra weight of offroad steel bumpers. If you don't think your coils are sagging due to wear (unsure how common that is), then you ought to be fine just keeping the stockies. Just besure to make a note of which front coil comes off the drivers side, it's usually a tad taller to account for the weight of the battery and gas tank to keep the truck level. There are colored paint marks on the coils.

Im going to 2nd the

tacoma TRD recommendation b/c its a very cost effective way to do what you described. Ive found complete sets on CL for $200 to 300 with low miles. The bilstein 4600 (yellow) coilover/strut will yield 2"s of lift up front. From there you can pair a 1" coil with the rear 4600 shocks and youre done.

What year Tacomas? I just found a pair of front Taco TRD shocks/coilovers for years 05-12 on CL for $20.

After researching and reading all the posts on suspension I pulled the trigger on new 5100 Bilsteins paired with OME 884/895Es and 10mm poly front lift enhancers.

I'm going for a small lift with a little rake. Can't wait to get started.
