22re engine temp issue

My 85 4runner engine temp is anywhere from 200 to 218 degrees depending on the temp down here in Florida and how hard I'm driving it. As far as I know everything is perfectly operational on the coolant system. New coolant, tstat, hoses, radiator holds pressure and it looks very clean inside. So I just thought of something and if I don't explain it well please bare with me. First off I'm not using the stock water sensor that screws into the t-stat housing. I'm using my Autometer sensor which obviously goes to my guage. The stock sensor wire is just taped off. Now I'm wondering since I'm using the Autometer sensor my ecu isn't getting any info to make fan speed adjustments to maintain the correct engine temp. Does this make any sense?

I'm pretty sure the ECU wants to know the engine temp. Some systems use the same sensor as drives the gauge, others have a separate sending unit. I'm not sure what yours does, it is worth looking into...


The fan, IIRC, is a standard, clutched, thermostatically controlled hydraulically actuated unit. It functions totally independently of the ECU.


200-218 isn’t outrageous with a 195 t-stat and a stock fan clutch. Has the fan clutch been replaced? It might be getting a bit tired. In Florida I might try a 180 t-stat too.

Might wanna check I think there may be a second thermostat. I know my old Tacoma did and it gave me problems
