255/75/17 ST-Maxx vs Duratrac

**This only applies to the 255 size.

Want to run a 32+ tire, aggressive AT, have a Toytec lift. Will be doing rock trails. Has to be able to take a moderate beating.

Liked the Duratracs but dont want to deal with the fitment issues on the 285s.

Read a lot on 255's and think this best option.

When the 255/75/17 Duratracs came out that seemed perfect, and cheap, but then saw that they were "SL" rated, so I guess really a passenger car tire.

Then stumbled on the Cooper ST MAXX in this size and it is C rated. 20$ more than Duratrac. Comparable looks. Good reviews.

Question is:
Am I right, that the Cooper would be the better choice for offroad. And that Duratrac SL rated is not really meant for offroad?
Maybe the Duratrac is meant to be a tough "looking" tire in that size/rating.

If it was me I would opt for the ST Maxx since it has a burlier sidewall construction. I really liked the 255-75-17 size when I ran them.

I agree, if you run a lot of rock trails I wouldn't want the SLs.

I have the Duratrac SLs and have put them through some abuse, but I bought the SLs with street in mind knowing the sacrifice I was making based on how much time I spend on the highway.

i have the same size in 18's on my stock 4th gen. love the size and how milage is still good. im running bfg rugged terrains and love how they handle trails and quiet on the road over the bfg ko.

before i moved the fender liner

love how they can this size can fit stock with no rubbing. have my lift waiting to be installed.

I have the Coopers (though not 255s)on my Land Cruiser and did Black Bear Pass, Last Dollar Road, Imogene, Red Summit, and Clear Lake Trail and they were exellent. I have the Duratracs on my 4runner and love them, though I have yet to put them on any serious offroadring other than river beds and mud..

For rock trails I would go with the Cooper St Maxx. I have the Duratrac and love them but for more off road abuse the ST's are you better choice. I have a buddy that has them on his LC and he loves them even though they are a little heavier than the Duratrac.

I have the Goodyear Wrangler mtr in 255/75/17 and they're absolute beasts. I have yet to get stuck and I should have several times. Have great road manners too minus a little noise. And they look incredible IMO. I ran them with no lift for a few months and had no issues. Lifted, I only rub full lock I'm reverse. No wandering on the road either like one of my buddies with 285's does.

I had not considered the 255s until recently.
The skinnys do have a certain appeal.
Reminds me of old land rovers.

I have 33X12.5inch wide tires on the Land Cruiser. Put the spare in the wheel well and it was ridiculous.

The like very bottom part of the fender liner. I would move it forward but I'm used to it now and its not worth the effort.

im having a hard time finding them time and help to get it done. working on a budget and working all the time is a bit hard

I always hear how the gy duratrac has a weaker sidewalk but if you were to get them in the e load I know they're stronger but are they comparable to other e load tires? Or are they known for weaker sidewalls in every kind of range?

I hadn't seen any posts about overall weaker side walls. Just that the 255 was an SL tire. All the LTs seem to be C, D or E.

Same boat here man, I wouldn't have thought about the "Pizza Cutters" as I've learned they are called lol till someone mentioned them, and now after some time looking around, I'm definitely leaning that direction. Looking for threads about them on my 5th gen to see if they rub at all on the stock suspension/height

I would go with the ST MAXX if your in rocks. I've seen too many people shread the duratracs on technical rocky trails. Hell out at the jamborree we had a guy blow the bead on a hill climb that wasn't terribly hard and that cost us 2 hours time. I've been running the coopers in 285/70r17 and my dad had recently switched aswell. I have taken these tires through some of the rockiest most technical trails I've ever tried and never had a failure or been left stranded. Plus they roll down the road very quietly and confidently. I've actually slashed the rubber on the sidewalk of one of mine and its still chugging along solely because of the three ply wall and super thick rubber on the sidewalls.

I'm on the highway more than I'm off road and I don't plan on doing anything too technical so I went with the 255/75/17 Duratracs. I think I'm more likely to be in desert conditions and rougher fire roads than technical rocky terrains. I figure I'll move up to 285s eventually, but that's when the 4runner is no longer my DD.
