3.4 swap failed CA BAR test

Hello all,

Its been a very long time since I posted here. I finally swapped out my 3.0 for the 3.4, all thanks to Toyonlyswaps in OR. Has any one passed the CA BAR recently 2015-2017? If so, what did you do?

Wish I could help but I don't know how to read that because we don't emissions testing here. The way I read that is you did what was needed if those check marks meant you installed that stuff. If not then you would have to install that stuff????

I believe what they are telling you is that the vehicle needs to be brought up to emission standards for the donor motor, which came, i assume from a tundra. Not the emission standards of your 90 4-runner.

Yes. Everything checked is what needs to be done. Sorry, I should have led with this question in the first post.

-Has anyone who has accomplished this swap, has successfully used the unmodified 3.4 crossover pipe and re routed the exhaust to the passenger side?

Before I start buying parts, I would like to know if its possible. I dont want to start buying everything then finding out that they dont work/fit. I cannot modify anything until the last O2 sensor.

My last ditch effort, is to register in another county that is smog exempt.

Sorry, my post isn't going to help your situation. I'm just surprised you actually went to the trouble of going through BAR, especially with the S/C. They're the most finnicky people ever. Every bit and hose has to be perfect.

To think though, who would honestly look at that 4Runner and think it's been engine swapped?

If smog is a concern, then it would be a matter of paying someone a couple hundred bucks for a "smog." Does the state need to know it's got a different engine? Of course not! Lol.

If you ever did get pulled over and cited, you'd have to go through the process you've about willingly put yourself through... but it's highly unlikely a cop would think to check unless something outrageous tips him off (Racing, turbo blow off, intercooler sticking out of bumper, etc).

Since a 4Runner isn't nearly as flashy as most cars that do the illegal smog, and I doubt any cop would even question the motor even if they were staring directly at it, why even tell BAR?

Seriously though, do cops even have swap pictures of Toyota V6's like they do with Honda Civics and Nissan 240s?

I went thru all this bullshit like 6 years ago. ****er wouldn't pass because of my crossover pipe. Routed it down on driver side and he was reluctant to accept it even tho my emission output was literally (LITERALLY!) zeros across the board. Ran cleaner than an electric car.

Luckily he pulled his head out and signed off. They don't like the exhaust modified but it makes it hard cuz the 4wd shit.

I ****in hate bureaucracy.

Good luck and sorry to hear it. You could always get a p.o. Box in like Idaho or somewhere where's there's no emission laws for registration papers. Just a thought for a loop hole.

so you had an oregon company, based in a part of the state that doesn't not require emissions testing (Oregon DEQ) on a truck that needs to pass the strictest emissions requirements in the nation and wonder why it failed?

Did you tell them it would need to pass CA Standards?

Yes, I did ask them if it would pass. I was reassured that other Californians have successfully passed although that was in 2012-2014. It seems CA has tighten the reigns on the smog even more. Back when I was researching this swap (2013) the state ref informed that the exhaust didn't matter, I wish I had that in writing.

So does anyone know if the stock 3.4 crossover pipe will fit the 2nd gen body?

I don't think it will but that's unconfirmed for mine. I know when I had the custom crossover pipe built it was very close to the engine and still had a slight rub on firewall. Might need a body lift to use 3.4's crossover.
Not to mention dealing with routing the rest of the exhaust under that side of the vehicle: 4wd driveshaft, gas tank etc.

Really sucks having people making laws/regulations without any real technical knowledge. The whole point is cleaner air right? And the newer motor most assuredly runs cleaner. I feel your pain man.

i looked at swapping my 3.0 out by exactly who you used. i asked for an invoice and info regarding passing CA inspection for my motor swap. THEY SAID "WE DO NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL PASS CA SMOG AND WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE":noidea:

so i passed on that. If you live in Southern CA, i would recommend taking a cruise to Santa Ana or Garden Grove. Don't ask them right away/straight up, but shoot some breeze with them and gauge them. I am sure one of the smog techs would be happy to hook his ride up to the machine for a bill or so. make sure you hit an independent shop! but I bet it will cost you 2 bills. olice:

I did a swap a few years ago at the same shop. Great guys there! Of course they said they're not sure what CA smog requirements are so that was a bit of a risk.

Anyway, I had a 91 Pickup, and we put in a 3.4L from a 2000 Taco. I had the same issue, IIRC, and had this little shop in Alhambra take care of it for me. I think it was some exhaust piping and O2 sensors, so it sounds very similar to your situation.

So it's totally possible to do, and I believe it only cost me $300 at the shop. I lived down the street from that shop at the time so it was a no-brainer for me to have them do it. If you decide to just take it to a shop, I can send you their infos.

Edit: to directly answer your question, i dont' know, but i think the shop fabbed up some piping for me that looked OEM enough for the state ref. in any case, i passed easily afterward.

Smogging is no issue, I can get that done. I just wanted to make it legitimate on record.

PERFECT! thats what I wanted to hear. All though I have a bit more to change, my main concern was the exhaust since there are brake lines and drivetrain. Ill update this post when im done.

Any updates? I recently failed my ref inspection this month here in the Bay Area for just the exhaust on the wrong side and he needed a letter from a toyota Service writer to confirm the ECU is for a 97' Tacoma.
