They certainly did in Brazil. It was several thousand more expensive and less performance, but like I said, it was cheap to run. I test drove one in '97 and stuck with gas.

The 1KZ-TE is a 3.0 L (2982 cc), 4 cylinder, SOHC, 2 valves per cylinder turbo diesel engine with indirect injection. Bore is 96 mm and stroke is 103 mm, with a compression ratio of 21.2:1. Maximum output is 130 hp (97 kW) @ 3600 rpm with maximum torque of 287 N·m (211 lb·ft) @ 2000 rpm. Redline is 4400 rpm. First produced in 1993, it is still used in new model vehicles today. The 1KZ-TE also adopts the electronically controlled fuel injection, ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System - intelligent) technology which is similar in basic construction to a modern gasoline injector, although utilizing considerably higher injection pressures, it is an indirect injection engine which gives it a significant efficiency and fuel consumption penalty. It was replaced in most markets with the 1KD-FTV engine which uses common-rail direct injection.

The KZN185 Surf is what we call a 4Runner, and is called a HiLux SW4 in Brazil. After our 3Gs, the US and rest-of-world became different platforms.

Pretty sure that's what he has in the 4Runner on CL. Note the redline of 4400 compared to the 6600 on the 5VZ-FE that truck was built with. I would really like to know what he did to the gearing, if anything. If stock, that thing is slower than molasses.

I would only use that engine in some part of the world without paved highways.

Not just in Brazil, The diesel is very popular in Asia, Australia etc., My dad owns a Hilux with 3L (nonturbo). When I get to drive it, yes, you have to struggle to get it to 60 MPH. Then another struggle to keep it at 60 MPH. Other than that the motor runs and runs without a single problem, river crossings are easy with it.

It is really a piece of mind if you want to do surface roads, but a big no for highway driving.

Ever driven a stock height V6 3rd gen on 225's? Surprisingly quick. I do think that even 32's with a minor lift can slow these things down, though. As much as I like the V8 in the 4th, the feel just isn't right. Might as well bump it up to the UZJ100 if I really want that V8.

With that said, any turbo diesel before the 1KD is just a nasty, filthy, noisy piece of machinery that Toyota made as a cruel prank because they knew it torment people forever since it wouldn't break down. Leave those engines for pig farm Hilux trucks.

Huh. My buddy has a stock 08 sr5 and I really like it. Feels more solid than my 3rd gen. Quieter, less rattles, and of course much more power. I'm not a big fan of the body style though. It's like the designers couldn't figure out whether they wanted it to look like a tuff truck, or modern crossover.

I like 100 series lc's, but they are significantly heavier than 4th gen, much more expensive per year and mileage, and I love rolling down the rear window. I don't think I could live without that option now that I'm used to it.

The values stated in the link below are for the early versions of the 1KZ-TE. the TDI 1KZ-TE used on the N185 and J95/J120 have 145 hp @ 3600 rpm and 340 N-m @ 2000 rpm.

I should've specified - for Hilux engines. You're right, that's a great engine.

Anyone care to venture a guess what 170 hp and 305 torque would feel like in a stock 4runner? To further clarify, 305 torque @ 1,700 rpm and 170 hp @ 3,400 rpm.
