im looking at getting a 4runner when i get out of the marine corps. i have a 2007 r6 but i need something more functional for everyday life and my other hobbies. im giving myself a 10k budget and i was looking for some input from some of you guys that know more about these trucks than i do. so give me some ideas for a bulletproof 4runner please

I'm definitely a firm believer in maintenance (preventative maintenance more to the point). Start with maintenance. When I first picked up mine, I did a complete suspension refresh (minus control arms), timing belt, water pump, coolant hoses, accessory belts, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, front to back fluid flushes, etc.

haha no doubts there. im open minded to other generations its just everything ive been reading is that the 99-2000s were the best stock off road and the engines are better. Yea im definetly starting with maintenance. All the fluids, filters and everything will get changed asap. Ive got alot of freinds that are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to fixing vehicles. i just know enough to not sound like an idiot when i talk about it lol. ive found some engine rebuild kits for like 500. And im most likely going to change the fuel pump right after i get it just because alot of people like driving their vehicles on empty. and i was thinking about replacing the injectors along with that. Suspension will come shortly after. Especially from reading about how they sag in the back and having that many miles on the stock suspension theyll proly need a change anyway. I also plan on getting the transmission cooler. And ill be sure to check for this "pink milkshake" i keep reading about before i buy the truck.

You mostly hear that because there's more 3rd gen owners on this site than 1st gen owners. The 1st and 2nd gen trucks are super capable in stock form, with better clearance and angles than the 3rd, and the '84 or '85 solid axle is definitely more durable than any of the IFS setups. A 3rd gen with the elocker would have the edge on anything that came before, but it's easier to add a locker to a 1st gen than SAS a 3rd gen. Something to think about, if offroad prowess is a priority.

hah thats true. i had an older toyota pickup that had that 3.0 efi in it. it had like 400k miles on it but it was still runnin pretty well. the transmission was going out though. i would have to put all my bodyweight on the stick to get it to go into 1st. i hit a deer with it and it broke my 4wheel drive. at that point me and my dad didnt want to mess with it anymore so we got rid off it. but it was a pretty solid truck for how old it was

I'm guessing a 3rd gen is probably what you're looking for then. There's no doubting that you'll get a more powerful drivetrain and more comfortable ride.

3rd gen all the way. It has the best ground clearance of the 00's and up 4Runners plus you will probably find one easier for sale thats in your price range.
