4Runner vs GX470

I agree with your assessment; however, as THEROCK said, its FAR from a Land Cruiser - one look underneath is all you need.

To be fair, the Land Cruiser name today is a far cry from the Land Cruiser of old...one look at the IFS is all you need. :D. And Toyota has openly admit that the FJ and current 4runners have surpassed the big TLC in off-road capability.

I'm talking about the 100 and I know Thai - we've been through this. Durability 100 wins. It was never intended to be a rock crawler - been through that too.

You miss your G?

Back on topic - I would get a GX if a hundy wasnt in my future - I think they are one of the best looking cars on the road.

Hey, your attempt to put down a lesser vehicle is pretty clear...I was just pointing out the obvious...did I offend you? Miss my G? What does that have to do with anything...at least I don't use my parent's ride to put down a member's ride! :( I appreciate what someone has gotten with their own money.

Btw, TLC of old was capable AND durable...that is no longer the case...since 1998....

I'm a car slut as I go through them like toilet paper. Here is a recently sold rig. I think you guys will appriciate this one. God Dang it was slow. But what a TANK. I sold it for $9K with 220K on the odo. It was MINT.

One day I hope to own an Iron Pig, but they are becoming scarce.

Have a LOT of patience. :lmao: Slow slow slow. It actually rode really well with the OME lift and 33' pizza cutters. Just never got out of it's own way. Perfect family expedition rig though!

I did think about buying a GX but I didn't for 2 reasons. It does look a little soccer mom-ish and my insurance would be higher. I really like the GX460's though :) I'm glad I have my 4Runner :) My JBL system sounds good enough that I don't have the want to change it out. I like having cars now where I don't need to change out the stereo system, it gets old after awhile.

My insurance was only $3 more a month for the GX. That's what I get for being married and over 30 I guess. I changed out the stereo in the 4Runner but got to revert back before I traded it in. The Lexus sounds great and my days of JL audio 10s are probably done so I agree on trading things out. Like I said, I really liked the 4runner, and am transitioning to love the Lexus. My wife thinks I'm nuts as I want to put the wheelspacers back on this one and lift it. She said NO, so I have to give it a little bit. :naughty:

All you need: rocksliders + slightly bigger AT tires +/- rear locker (ARB).

With those mods, your GX will be crazy capable...all the while still make your wife happy because she still can take it to the mall with her girlfriends who drive Mercs and Bimmers. :D

You mean those fancy shmancy running boards aren't sliders??? :jump:

My new ARB catalog should be coming first of the year. It's like a holy grail to me. It takes it's place as a coffee table book for all to see.

LOL!!!! The truth revealed!

I went from a '99 4Runner on 33"s Locked front and rear long travel on FJ80 and Tundra springs:

An '07 GX that I'm building up. Except for a couple of people at toyota120 no one mods a GX. Overseas sites for the Prado and 4Runners are the only other places to get ideas.

I've modded the NAV unit already.

I've modded the NAV unit already.

I've noticed! I've found about five of them. Some are a bit over the top for what I want to do, but there is a white one that's an inspiration. Next Tuesday I'm meeting a guy with a set of Tundra rims I really like. That's first and I want to get some spacers to stick em out a bit. From there, I want a few inches of lift with a bit of flex but I'll be honest, it's not doing anything hardcore.

Have an 07 GX (with ML) and my 05 in the family and your comparisons are spot on. The only thing I disagree with is the quality of the ML. I think it is way overrated and we have had many problems with blown speakers. The radio still cracks and sounds too boomy (especially with the AUX port). My dad's non ML 10 RX radio sounds a lot better. While the GX interior looks and feels better, I am still not a huge fan. My entire family actually prefers the 4Runner over the GX because of the top heaviness, barnyard door, and useless third row seats. I still haven't really had the time to listen to the 2010-up GX ML or 4Runner JBL.

Thought I would share some experiences so far between the two vehicles.

2006 4Runner Sport Edition V8 (42K) vs. 2005 Lexus GX470 (19K)

Drivetrain: First they are the same drivetrain of course, but that so far seems to be where it ends. The Lexus shifts smoother, the engine sounds more beefy when you put your foot in it. The 4Runner is faster, butt dyno tells me.

Ride: The Lexus is FAR smoother. Considerably. I'm sure a percentage lends itself to the tires but I wasn't running anything aggressive on the 4Runner. This may have to do with the weight. 400lbs is the difference? Different spring rates? Not sure but the Lexus hands down has this in the bag.

Handling: 4Runner wins. Lower center of gravity. In the Lexus defense, I didn't have the rear air suspension lowered or the sport setting on. Not sure how much this would help though.

Interior: Subjective of course. The Lexus is posh. The 4Runner is spartan. The Lexus has more room for the occupants. Leg room seems to be less in the Lexus and the headroom is far greater. Much better storage in the 4Runner. Fit and finish in the Lexus has got the 4Runner beat.

Sound System: For the Lexus in a word, AMAZING. 4Runner is pathetic. Not much else to say.

4WD system: Why didn't the 4Runner get the stick shift like the Lexus. I prefer the stick as opposed to electronics. Have not taken the Lexus off road.

The tough part of all of this is I KNOW the Lexus is more than capable off road but I don't know when that will happen compared to the 4Runner. That may be the one drawback. I don't miss the roll down window in the back, thought maybe I would. The swing out door has advantages and disadvantages. This is only personal preference. Those running boards on the Lexus are um, low.

All and all, for myself, I made the right choice. The 4Runner was great, but being 6'2 and 230lbs, it was small in the front seat. Now I feel like the Lexus fits me. It's more luxury than I'm used to, but it's going to be an easy transition. I'd love to see more peeps move into the GX and see more build ups. I've seen a few and when they are lifted with aggressive tires, boards removed, they look pretty sweet.

If anyone is looking to make the switch and have other questions, let me know.

Good comparison. I like the 4Runner exterior better. The angles look so much better and more masculine, but some members in my family have had a few GX's and they were fantastic

LOL!

Maybe next we'll see something slightly more ridiculous like comparing a MB G55 AMG vs. a Kia Sportage. Just slightly though. :bravo:

It’s a very apples to apples comparison… Many of the parts are interchangeable… including suspension. Modded long travel GX is a monster in a tuxedo.

I wheel with a GX guy, very similar trucks. Very little cost difference too when buying used. In fact, GX is often times found for less money. Maybe not as much now, but in the past before people figured it out, no one knew about them.
