A few interesting survey questions possibly relating to the 6th gen

Received a third survey from Maritz CX about my 2017 4Runner. Here are the interesting questions:

4Runner vs. Tahoe sure, Highlander maybe, but Pathfinder/Santa Fe?!

Looks like they might be considering a hybrid or diesel variant. Maybe both? I naturally said I'd pay more for a diesel and actively do not want a hybrid.

I've heard they are looking into diesel, but it is purely for fuel economy. It won't be a "fun" diesel. Think the 4cyl that the Prado gets in other markets.

Depending how they did hybrid, it could be good. The new LS500h has a pretty slick hybrid setup that gets that big boy to 60 in 5.4 seconds with a 3.5L gasoline engine.

"The new LS 500h is equipped with Lexus’ Multi Stage Hybrid System, a breakthrough technology that enriches the hybrid powertrain performance experience and is also seen on the all-new LC. The system adds a four-stage shifting device to the Lexus Hybrid Drive combination of a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine and two electric motors. The result is more direct response to driver inputs while maintaining the characteristic smoothness and efficiency for which Lexus hybrids are renowned.

In a conventional full hybrid vehicle, engine output is boosted by the electric motor via a reduction gear, but with the new Multi Stage Hybrid System the power from the V6 engine and the hybrid battery can be amplified by the four-stage shifting device, allowing much greater drive power to be generated when accelerating from stationary and achieving a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds.

The design of the system places the multi-stage shift unit immediately behind the power split device, on an axis aligned with the engine crankshaft. Although the unit has four speeds, the D range has a simulated shift control pattern that delivers the feel of driving with a 10-speed gearbox. As vehicle speed rises, engine speed increases with a linear, direct and continuous acceleration feel, free from the “rubber band” effect witnessed in some continuously variable transmissions. In the 10th gear range, the CVT control allows for high-speed cruising at lower engine revs for quiet, smooth and fuel-efficient performance."

Toss a transfer case on the back of that transmission and we'd have a 27mpg 4Runner that does 60 in 6.5 seconds... The 4400lb LC500h does 4.7 seconds to 60 and 35mpg highway. 27mpg and 6.5 seconds to 60 seems completely doable in the 4Runner chassis.

I highly doubt that Toyota will go diesel in the U.S market. Too much development to make compliant. But Motortrend just released an articles couple weeks ago stating that they are looking to go hybrid with several models!

Come on... Being a proper truck has nothing to do with what drives the wheels.

Considering an all electric would probably have more torque and horsepower, I'd be all for it. Just think of what you could do suspension wise with a motor attached to each wheel and no drive shafts! Would probably have a lower center of gravity if they put the batteries in the floor board ala Tesla so you'd have less body roll.

Just keep a real frame on it.

Even IF anyone could ever come up with a fully-electric vehicle that can be charged in the time it takes to fill a gas tank, and IF the appropriate ultra fast chargers were as common as gas stations (and both of those "ifs" are virtually impossible to accomplish), there's still one more problem to solve for off-road vehicles. If you ever have the misfortune of running out of charge in the boonies, there's no way to get "fuel" (a recharge) to the vehicle.

With a gas or diesel engine you can haul extra fuel, or someone can bring fuel to you. An electric vehicle would have to be hauled to the charging station.

I wish they would focus less on "hybrid/electrification/blah blah blah" and focus on the big picture just make what you got more efficient.

Take mass out
Increase engine output with same displacement
1 more additional gear (6speed automatic)

If they could use higher strength steel (not even fancy aluminum) and get a 500 lbs weight reduction, while introducing direct inject fuel injection + lean burn at cruise with a 6 speed automatic, that would be perfect.

The 500 lbs could come from thinner gauge steel of a stronger alloy, doing some more R&D on the alloy wheels and see if you can cut 10lbs from each wheel, some more R&D on aluminum control arms, aluminum skid plates. You could easily get the 500 lbs loss.

We say this, and I certainly agree to a large extent, but the likely reality is that there is not much of a market for a bare bones stripped down $35k SUV in today's world of expectations.

What would make more sense to me anyway is a dynamic hybrid system that is responsive to the angle, torque, RPMs, speed, etc, and makes the best fuel economy choices based upon them. But that would probably cost $50-60k, so I think I will just be happy for the next 20-30 years with what I got!

I got a similar survey after I bought my 17 TRDOR last month.

I made sure at every opportunity to say that the body on frame design was the most important feature the 4R has.

Just doing my part so they don't ruin the 4R in future generations.

I kinda want the new 4runner to be unibody or just phased out. My value would go up like the FJ and I wouldnt want to buy the 6th gen hahaha

Build a SR-5 with TRD-Pro suspension, frt and rear lockers and the crawl gizmos, no third row and with rubber mats from the 2nd seat back to the hatch and on the side-walls so you can USE the cargo area without tearing it up. A TRUE OffRoad package without all the nannies and luxury stuff. Revise the front and rear bumpers for better approach and a factory 9K winch. 285's and 4.56 gearing stock..........:drummer:
