ABS issues and Smog Check

Hey Guys,

Been a while since I've posted, but I'm stumped at this point. I apologies for the wall-of-text.

Some background:

I had a lower ball joint failure, and replaced the entire front steering components. Steering rack, Upper/Lower ball joints, tie rod ends etc.

However, once I got my truck back the ABS kicked on for no reason causing me to take extended distances to finally come to a stop. I pulled the ABS, and called my mechanic. He stated it may be due to the unequal pressures from my brake lines. I have OEM brake line, and one stainless steel.

He suggested I change the steel brake line to make the pressure "even" on both sides.

Well... I finally got around to it and changed the break line, but the ABS still kicks on. So once again, my ABS is disconnected which I am fine with.

BUT, I have a smog check coming up and I am concerned with the ABS light affecting the ability to pass smog.

Since I have had the ABS unplugged, my scangauge has stated "Not Ready." This has been from when I first had my ABS disconnected, about 3 months ago.

I'm thinking maybe I need to bleed the other side to equalize the pressure?

Any feedback or assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Wheel speed sensor might be damaged.

You can always pull the bulb on the ABS light for the smog and then figure it out after.

Thank you for the reply. I really appreciate it.

I had the sensor replaced on the side of the LB joint failure, but not on the side that I am having the ABS issue.

I do some research on how to test the wheel speed sensor.

You can always pull the bulb on the ABS light for the smog and then figure it out after.

I have considered this, but my scanner still showed my ECU was "Not Ready" after an extended period of time.

Do you know if the ABS light would affect this?

There are 7-8 monitors that need to be set to "ready" in order for the ECU to be ready. Your scanner may not be advanced enough to show the individual monitors. The ABS system does not affect ECU readiness. Perhaps your mechanic cleared the codes in order to see if the ABS light went away. Doing this resets all the monitors to "not ready" and will require drive cycles to set them all.

Replace the other wheel sensor. My old dodge I only replaced one wheel sensor and it kept giving me a light. Replaced the other one and never had another issue.

When I did my Tundra brake upgrade I was getting ABS action at low speeds when I'd come to a stop. I assumed it was air in the ABS valve body, so I bled the hell out of it about three times, and it didn't fix it.

It seemed to be happening on the drivers' side, so I pulled the wheel speed sensor back out (I had removed them to give me more room while doing ball joints) and found a small bit of rust on the end of it. It must have gotten pushed back into the hole when I reinstalled the sensor. I cleaned it up, put it back in, and everything was fine.

Short story....check your wheel speed sensors. :hat:
