Air Flow Meter cleaning

I was comped a few oil change services from the dealer and of course after the service they have a list of recommendations. He said my Air Flow Meter is dirty and needs to be cleaned. He told me I should not try and clean it myself since I might damage it. It was my understanding that this was pretty easy to do on your own. Is he right about it being sensitive to damage? They are asking $45 for the service. This is coming from the same dealership who forgot to put my oil fill cap back on and told me I needed to get my brake fliud replaced after I had the brake fluid serviced 1000 miles before.

Im assuming you are referring to the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF), there is a thread going on about cleaning that sensor. They can't even name it right, i wouldn't trust them or find another reliable dealer shop.

In the Toyota literature, what we commonly call the MAF sensor really is referred to as "mass air flow meter". So this dealer does get points for reading.

I'm really surprised that a dealer offers to clean it. Most dealers would say that it's impossible to clean it and that you need a new one for $100-$150.

It is a delicate sensor, but whatever the dealer can do, you can certainly do.
