Another 265/70 vs 245/75 Thread

In searching through the existing threads on this issue (that I found anyway) I'm seeing a lot of great responses, but not many from people who have done it. I'm hoping to elicit a few real world experiences in addition to more of the solid advice that has come before.

I'm thinking of downsizing to a 245/75 because:
I live in Minnesota and deal with snow for about 4 months a year, it seems generally accepted that a narrower tire will cut through snow better.
I'm on a budget and the 245 size is about $100 less expensive for Revo 2's
I'm guessing that gas mileage should improve marginally from a little less rotational weight and a smaller contact patch.
The most "offroading" I'll be doing is unimproved, fire, and logging roads and the occasional trail to campsites around Moab.
My truck is a 97 limited.

I'm wondering if my assumptions are correct, how the Runner handles on pavement and trail with narrower tires, and how going narrower might affect towing of a small, relatively, light boat.

Thanks!

I'm considering this as well. They should be better in the snow (they will float less), and give slightly better fuel efficiency. However, I know I won't like the look of the fender flares hanging out over the tire...so if I did this, I would probably get some 1" wheel spacers or something.

Thanks guys for the replies. I'm a little wary of it looking funny, but not too worried about it. The 245s are less than and inch skinnier than 265s, which amounts to only 1/2" in at the fender at each tire.

rdgt4r, what aspect ratio are you running with your 255's?

Im at 255/85-16 so its roughly a 33.5 inch tire and with my sport flares they are about an inch inside the wheel well area.

Ordered some 245/75 Revo 2's last week from Discount Tire (they didn't have them in stock) and will update when I get them on.

It was a timely move, I had a rear tire blow out this afternoon. Fortunately the spare lowered just fine and had air in it.

I cant wait to see them I didnt think they had 245 in the A/T variety so thats rad. Whats the aspect on them?

Never Mind I researched, they make a shit ton of tires in that size I was thinking of something different.

Got them mounted last week after a delay due to a family emergency.

The Good: 245's don't look to skinny, even with limited fender flares - wasn't a big deal to me anyway, but seems to be to some. They ride great on pavement around town and on the highway. I haven't been off road or in snow (early spring here) with them yet. Significantly quieter than the badly worn Dueler 693's that were on the 4Runner. $70 Bridgestone rebate.

The Bad: The 245/75 size is not stocked in Minnesota by Discount Tire. They had to order them from Chicago which took a little while, which wouldn't have been a big deal, but...

The Ugly: At a steady 62 mph the rear of the truck starts bouncing like I'm hauling a crate of jumping beans moving in unison. Discount Tire rebalanced them, ride match rebalanced them with the same result. So I'm waiting for two replacement tires to ship from Chicago, one or both of the rears must have a defect.

Anyone else have experience with this? I currently have the 265/70R16 on my 4Runner and a buddy is selling a set of 245/75R16 Rims and Tires off his Tacoma for a super low price. So I thought I would use up my set of tires and then switch them when they were starting to go bald. But I was worried about speedo errors or something else that might give a wear and tear part a short lived life.

How

How did they work out? Buddy of mine (35 year certified Toyota expert)selling me a 2001 4Runner last mites he had fixed up for his wife but she wanted his Sequoia so he decided to sell to me for $3800. Has new radiator hoses he replaced front parts and pulled heads and did headgaskets etc. just needs tires maybe next year but they are 265 70 16 BFG Long trail. I’m not running them during winter hunting and found a new 245 75 16 Goodyear Duratrac and can get 3 more in a store here for a Good price. How did the 245’s work out ,especially for winter driving and off road?

Tall is good for Winter as I’ve heard, but I’m in Florida so have NO experience with the snow. I daily 265/70/17 and they’re nothing to complain about

I bought Duratrac 245/75-15 load range E tires last month from the local farm home store. Every year they have a "buy 3 get 1 free" deal. The sale, combined with the "10% off when you open a store credit account" discount (card already canceled!) got me the four tires, m&b, and road hazard for $708.

The tires look fine, although I contemplated going with the 265/75-16's as they would have fit, but I was worried about the effect on my speedo/odo and decrease in performance. I'm really glad I didn't. The 245/75-16 seem spot on to the old tires with respect to the speedo/odo.

First impression was good, but there was more noise. My previous tires were 265/70-16 Firestone LE2, which were a smooth highway tread. The noise is audible but not that significant and occurs from 30-35mph and again at 60-65mph. Not a deal killer, in my opinion. I have some loss of steering/braking on rainy, wet pavement also. No surprise considering the previous tires. I have since slowed down and adjusted to this.

I have not driven in winter conditions, yet. From what I've read, they will easily outperform the old tires in this regard.
