Anyone/anything remotely near Spruce Pine, NC

Well it looks like i will be spending my summer in Spruce Pine, NC. I will be interning at the Unimin Quartz mine in Spruce Pine. I was hoping i could find out if anyone lived around there and wanted to do some light wheeling, or if anyone even knew of any wheeling around that area. it is all forest, so i was thinking there has to be some place to wheel. I still need to find a place to live, but i will probably be close to Asheville, NC. Anyways i was just hoping to find someone to wheel with or let me know a little about the area.

Best bet is going to be Tellico in Murphy. I have never been there, so I am not sure how suitable it is for "Light" off-roading.

Thanks for the info man, i looked it up and it sounds fun. I think its like 2 1/2 or 3 hours away which isnt too bad. I was hoping for something closer, but we'll see.

I live in Asheville and work Madison Co. Madison Co is about 30 minutes west from Mitchell Co. (Where Spruce Pine is located) I get up to Spruce Pine on occassion and spent quite a bit of time up there when I first got stationed in G1. (I'm a NC State Trooper) It's a really nice area, you should love it. Known as the home of the perfect Christmas Tree!

Don't know of any wheeling spots up there. Best bet is to make some friends and ask around because what you'll find will likely be private property with trails. (With permission of course).

As far as large public areas- Last I heard Tellico was closed, I could be wrong.

If you're willing to drive, Harlan KY isn't too far away and I see alot of people headed up I-26 to go there.

BTW- If you plan on living in Asheville and working at Unimin, factor in the ongoing road widening of US19 through Madison and Yancey. They've still got a few years until completion and at times it can bring traffic to a crawl.

Can't help you out with wheelin in NC, but glad to see a fellow Hokie on the boards.

Callalantee is a good place to wheel. It is in Mountain City, TN and is a pretty easy 1.5 hour drive from Spruce Pine. It is a private park and last I heard it was about $20 to ride...

Bumpas Cove is also a good wheeling spot. It is near Johnson City, TN. It is about an hour away from you and is free.

There are several clubs in your area. I pesonally hang out on NC4x4.com and 4x4grace.com. Both clubs have regular rides but 4x4grace is out of Johnson City, and has a lot more rides in your specific area.

93toy - thanks for letting me know about the traffic. I would have never known that. I think housing down there will be the biggest challenge. I need to find a balance of something close to a city and close to the mine. If you ever pull over a Black 01' 4runner with hokie stickers go easy on me . Hopefully we wouldnt meet on bad terms though...

Sorry bud, can't help you there. I always went home to Winchester to go wheeling. If you ever feel like making the trip up to Winchester there are tons of places to go. Shawneeland and "the cove" in Gore are two pretty good places if you like mud.
