Approaching 137,000 miles

While washing and waxing the car this weekend, I had a lot of time to think. As my current vehicle gets older, I suspect it will not last forever.

The question keeps surfacing - use it as a trade in OR keep it forever replacing it with new parts ...possibly, modifying it to new *greatness*?

Thoughts?

What I might do:
1 - Old Man Emu suspension? I have the X-REAS system... not as good as it once was.

2 - New seats? ...the leather is torn up on the driver's seat.

3 - Stereo is Great (JBL - Stock). 'would like IPOD/IPHONE interface & satellite radio integrated. Subwoofer ... upgrade.

4 - DVD players in the headrests (a.k.a. "...the shut the hell up option").

5 - Trade it in for a Rock Warrior Tundra, because the 5th Gen 4runner is not favored (for me).

Yeah, well the things you need can be added for much cheaper than a new car! Keep the runner and mod it till your happy! If you are getting board try driving a Ford then run back to the 4runner! LOL.

Yea, keep it forever! Plan on keeping my 03 till she burns from fire or gets totaled from an accident which I hope neither happen. Oh yea, just turned 70K on mine

#3, I just recently upgraded my blown subwoofer with a new one and a small amp. The sub fits in the original spot and the small amp fits in the back quarter panel with the original amp. (the new amp only powers the sub) It sounds great to me, much better than it ever did before and it was fairly inexpensive.

I also added a USA Spec ($110) for IPod and Aux connectivity to the JBL system. It was a simple plug and play install and now I use my phone hands free through the stereo and stream Pandora from my phone and I also have the IPod hook up (which I don't use but my kids always do when they get in my truck) I'm really happy with the whole setup and price of it.

I am bearing down on 100K on our 04 and my plan is to press on and see how far it can go. I figure 250K to 300K should be possible without major issues. It still runs as good today as when it was new and it has all maintenance performed along the way and has been on a synthetic diet since we purchased it new. It is my wife's car and she loves it. We did just replace the head unit to gain Bluetooth, satellite radio and iPod integration. Probably be swapping the seat covers to a Katzkin leather with heaters in the near future. The XREAS still seems good so I will keep rolling on it. When it does go I will go to the Bilstein 5100's and level the front end up with them.

I agree with everyone else on this one. Keep it. I still have my 97 that I bought new now with 167,000 miles and just bought a 2011 T4R this past February. My daughter drives the 97 to school and back. Nice to have an extra truck to go four wheeling with.

I think it's safe to say that Toyota has put a solid low maintenance vehicle when this is what you are worried about not lasting. 0.02

Thanks everyone for their replies. Up until now, I have owned MOPAR and GM. Sad to say, but I am accustomed to start rebuilding the car before the payments end. I guess I have "baggage"... I am in NEW territory above 97k with a vehicle.

Yeah i had xreas, ripped it out and got my OME gear from toyota of dallas. I'm looking into front coil-overs though after not being to satisfied with the front strut assemblies by OME. I'm liking the OW's 2.5 HD coilover kit.

Bulletproof reliability is easy enough to get used to! I'm at 179k on my '04 V8 and I plan on going a lot longer.

it's all about weighing what the 4Runner needs as it ages versus what you're willing to pay to keep it running. I just traded in my 03 4Runner for an 08 with way less miles because i wanted something newer that I wouldn't have to worry about keeping up on as much. Again, it really depends on what you want and what you need. I would have loved to not have a car payment, but my payment only went up $20 a month for a much newer car so I can't really complain

I was the same way, Chevy and a BMW till I got my 4Runner now want to get rid of the Monte Carlo and get a second 4Runner.
They are that good.
