Automatic gear shift gets hot

Well...my 4 runner seems to be hot natured.

Even though the tranny is new (95 automatic 4x4 limited), it gets buring hot. After a 30-45 minute drive on the freeway in average temperatures, the metal part of the gear shift gets too hot to touch.

I am planning to install a tranny cooler, but it doesnt seem that it should get quite this warm.

does anyone alse have a hot tranny?

Could be a problem with the trans, or you may have a problem with the thermal shielding around the catalytic converter or exhaust which is allowing heat to get to the area where the shifter mounts to the floor.
