Aux reverse lights in the rear bumper lense?

I'm going to add aux reverse lights to my runner. Dark tint makes it rough to back up at night. I've done this before with a previous vehicle and it's a pretty easy project. I was wondering if anyone had ever attempted to install reverse lights in the lense that it is in the bumper? I think it actually has lights in that lense on foreign models. As far as I know it does nothing on our models. Anybody?

I've seen a few threads on using the reflectors for aux brake lights and also for backup lights. Just have to google for it cause I don't have them bookmarked (at least not for the reflector to be a backup lamp).

It would be easier in the long run to just hook up a couple of backup lights underneath the bumper cover then to convert the reflectors into backup lamps.

Most on here just add aux backup lamps or use stronger/brighter bulbs such as LEDS from VLED or somewhere else.

There is a person on ebay who is selling customized reflectors from Japan. Pretty expensive ~ something like $250+$50 to ship. The person is selling both aux brake lamps or backup lamps.

I've read through most of the threads on here about it. I would like to avoid the lights that hang down under the bumper. I was thinking more about mounting the lights actually on the surface of the lens rather than mounting a socket to the backside where it was intended to be. Thoughts?

i am going to be putting LED trailer reverse lights on my truck. i dont know yet if im going to mount them flush in the bumper or under the bumper. got a set for$36 on ebay with free shipping

U can mod the rear reflectors, usually it makes them rear fogs for fog like a european car, wont be bright since red dont let a lot of like thru. Maybe remove the bumper lens/housing out and put some actual fog lights there.

On ebay type in 4runner rear fog and ull see them at 248+58 and its avalible in both red or white, dont know if its bright tho.

I can't remember what thread it was in but i remember seeing a member shape some sheet metal for those spaces and put reverse lights in them. After he painted them black it looked really nice.

What are the ebay kits listed as?

Also OHP, some have added 55W bulbs to their reverse lamp sockets. While I did not use their method, I soldered two 37.5W to a couple of sockets which worked really good. I had already bought CREE lamps, and also LEDs from VLED. IMO, the LED lamps from VLED were better. The new CREE are side firing now which might work better with our reflectors.

Someone cut out the bumper cover once (in a 06-09 I believe) and built in a pair of reverse lamps, but I can't remember when that was and don't have it bookmarked.

Ill have to take pictures. I just installed harbor freight 12.99 fog lights, wired straight to revese lights and pulled bulbs. Looks great works great!!!!

I'm gonna sub this thread OP since I'm looking to do something similar.

I'm thinking about retro-fitting my OE fog-lights (projector), to that location, now that they're just lying around. Post results on what you do and I'll do the same. I haven't dug in to see if the lens sizes are similar or not (wouldn't that be lucky? Just need some time to fool with it.

i just got some LED trailer reverse lights in the mail. might be bigger then you want but i think they will work great for me. i will post pictures when i mount them

I run a big ol Pep Boys tractor light. Bolts right up to an existing hole in the bottom of the frame.

The wiring on the left is for some tow lights on the top of the rig.

My concern about the lights under the bumper is clearance I have already hit the hitch off road, those lights won't work for me. I like the idea of the in bumper light retrofit from Japan.

If you mount something near the spare tire you would not have a clearance problem
