I recently purchased a 1998 SR-5 as a new daily/winter truck, but also with the intention of having it re-jumpstart my camping/out-dooring adventures.

The truck has certianly been kicking around for a while with 175k miles on it, and it would appear the previous owners kept up on basic maintenance. But, with all old vehicles its in need of love and I'll be doing my best to chronicle it's progress over the next year or so.

Modified the intake tube based on information I found here. I used a leftover piece of IC piping, cut it down with an hangle grinder and painted it with some Duplicolor bed-liner to give it a more OEM look. I'd like to replace the couplers with black ones, but oh well, this was free.

But then I found out about the Scion head units (thanks again T4R.org) and promptly ordered one. I'll document the install when I comes in. $56!! I'm stoked.

My deck-plate came in yesterday as well, I'll have to get that painted and installed this week! Why pay $200 for a CAI which only does the same thing?

Installed the Tru-Cool Trans Cooler today. Nice piece, I did have to by another piece of hose as I miss cut the one it came with by about 3 inches.

Grill came out nicely thanks to some input from here. However, when I tried to put it back in, I ended up braking half of the tabs. *Sigh*

Next up -

Grill Tabs, Ball Joints, Tires and Tundra Brakes - Oh my.

For some reason, the hoods on anthracite painted trucks tend to fade.

Yours, however, looks great.

In that case my hood is jacked up. It has a faded spot and clear coat pealing.

Up on the roof, same issue in two spots, but you can't see them without climbing up there.

I'm planning on going hood scope anyways so I'm not bothered.

You broke off the tabs or just the plastic clips that lock the tabs in? It it's the latter then you're only out pocket change whether you go with zip ties or the OEM clips.

I thought about doing the Satoshi mod, but then I'm on the fence. It looks great, but at the same time it makes the truck look dated.

After setting my satoshi grill at two different levels....first go round, about mid ways depth and second, as far back as possible....I think it would look best if the mesh was as far forward as possible. It would compliment the 4runners body style better in that position IMO.

Deck is in, looks great! Seller even gave me the Scion user manual!! I'm ordering a USB cord right now and will hopefully get to it this week. I'll also get the clock fixed (it comes and goes) and hopefully get some photos.

Took the truck to Silver Lake Dunes this past weekend with a friend and his family. Could not be more impressed. With the stock power and Cooper tires we where hoping to just get around on the sand, but aired down and in 4low, over drive off and power on, there was nothing this bad boy could not get over. Even got some air a few times!! :guitar3:


Videos to come (as he took them) but here are some of the pictures I have off my phone. You'll even notice I got the grill fixed. Trans cooler worked great, and the truck didn't bottom out once, not bad for stock 10" of ground clearance. Another friend had his Xtera their last year, and while it was much easier to get over the dunes, he bottomed out constantly.

They recently installed new long travel suspension this summer and finished her off with some Nismo Blue. Metal body panels to come next season!

Well FRACK!

Soldered up the Scion head unit last night. Followed Falcon115's instructions so there is no need to document that. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/audio-electronics/84630-t1814-installed.html

However, I go out to install it today and guess what..

Even better, i have two antena wires! :redbrick:

I'm not sure what to do at this point.

After some quick advice from Chainring, I removed the factory amp (duh) and continued as planned.

Ipods are go!

I took the liberty of changing the bulbs in the dash and cluster to better match the new head-unit. Not a perfect match, but better than green + amber. I'll order some LEDs and give that whirl latter.
