Best Place to Get Maps?

I've been looking to explore some more remote trails in Northern NV. For those not familiar with the area, mining is was a major source of growth in the northern part of the state, and as such there are old mining trails all over. The problem is, that means every trails is crisscrossed with with side-trails and bypasses that lead to abandoned mining sites and sometimes that can make it difficult to follow the "main" trail. That being said, I would like to buy or create an aerial map of certain areas using satellite imagery and with topography would be even better. The idea would be to laminate it so I or my co-pilot could track our progress and add notes with dry-erase markers. Could I possible get it from teh USGS or Forest Service? Are there companies that you can special order maps of a certain area?

Download the Backcountry Navigator app. Before you leave phone coverage, download maps on your phone so you still have them when you don't have service. Your phone's GPS will still work.

^ Good ideas. Also check out mytopo.com for free online topo maps (you can pay them t print one out if you want), that's my first resource for exploring mining areas.

For roads, contact the land manager (probably the BLM or FS) and get a copy of their travel management plan if there is one. It'll likely be a PDF, overlay that on Google Earth and then use that resource to build your .kmz file for the GPS unit of your choice. If you have an Android, Backcountry Navigator is hard to beat.

There are even many many pre-built trail nav points you can upload and download since it uses an open-source .gpx file technology. Trails for Moab, UT for example can be downloaded Trail Damage with all the important road markers.
